The Texas rivals face off at the American Airlines Center with similar season records having started the campaign with very different expectations.
The Rockets, led by backcourt duo James Harden and Chris Paul, narrowly missed out on reaching the NBA Finals last season after pushing the Golden State Warriors to the limit in the Western Conference finals. They were expected to mount another title challenge but currently sit 13th in the West with a disappointing 11-13 record.
The Mavericks, without the veteran presence of injured franchise star Dirk Nowitzki, were expected to struggle in the early months of the season.
However, the emergence of rookie sensation Luka Doncic and strong play from young guard Dennis Smith Jr and experienced big man DeAndre Jordan have propelled the Mavs into eighth spot in the West and a 12-11 record.
Dallas will be looking desperate for a strong performance after taking a 132-106 beating at the hands of the New Orleans Pelicans in their last outing.
