Great Britain's Joe Clarke has won a gold medal in the canoe slalom men's K1 final at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The 23-year-old clocked a winning time of 88.53 seconds to secure Team GB's second gold of the Games, finishing ahead of second-placed Peter Kauzer of Slovenia, while Jiri Prskavec took bronze for the Czech Republic.

The Stoke-born kayaker was forced to wait for his medal attempt, going eighth out of the 10 finalists, but expertly held his nerve to complete a superb performance at the Whitewater Stadium.

Neither of the two remaining competitors could better Clarke's time and he earned Britain's first Olympic medal in the men's K1 since Campbell Walsh at Athens 2004.

He had earlier finished third in the semi-finals, but would end 0.17 ahead of nearest rival Kauzer in the final.

Clarke's medal success gave Team GB's canoeing team a timely boost after David Florence's last-placed finish in the men's canoe slalom on Tuesday.
