Rutherford's Olympic leap

Long jumper Greg Rutherford produced the leap of a lifetime to clinch a place on the plane for Beijing at the UK trials.

Long jumper Greg Rutherford produced the leap of a lifetime to clinch a place on the plane for Beijing at the UK trials - just after discovering his grandfather had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The circumstances were all piled up against Rutherford in Birmingham, with his family problems only adding to the fact he has spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury and was still not fully fit.

Despite all this, Rutherford pulled out a flying late leap of 8.20 metres - not only good enough to win him the competition but also the Olympic A qualifying distance and enough to send him on his way to Beijing.

The 2006 European silver medal winner beat Chris Kirk and Nathan Morgan into second and third, with British record holder and defending champion Chris Tomlinson a big disappointment back down in fifth.

"I've just had the worst week and a half of my life and for this to happen to me is massive, massive and now I'm bound for Beijing," said Rutherford.

"That's the best competition of my life with 8.19m then 8.20m. All that's left now is to bring home a medal."

Sotherton subdued

Olympic heptathlon hope Kelly Sotherton continued her mixed build-up to Beijing as she could only finish in ninth place in the shot put with her distance of 13.68m almost a full metre less than her season's best.

Sotherton did mange a third-placed finish in the high jump to grab a 22nd senior championship medal but her jump of 1.78m was again not her best.

"I know I'm better than this, I'm training better than this," said Sotherton, who is one of Britain's big medal hopes at the Games.

"The wind didn't help but it wasn't good."

Liverpudlian 800m runner Michael Rimmer will make his Olympic debut in China after showing an impressive finishing kick to win a third successive title - the first man to do that since Steve Ovett in 1976.

The 22-year-old has suffered from illness this year but looked on top form as he powered away to beat Richard Hill and 1500m hopeful Andy Baddeley in a time of 1min 50.48sec.

Shakes shock

19-year-old Perri Shakes-Drayton sprung a shock when she defeated long-term British number one Natasha Danvers in the 400m hurdles.

Shakes-Drayton flew home in a time of 56.09sec and just got the edge over the defending champion by one-hundredth-of-a-second with Eilidh Child third in 57.83sec.

"I always seem to doubt myself but yet again I've done it," said the European junior silver-medallist.

"Seeing that time I'm over the moon."

Lisa Dobriskey and Susan Scott will represent Britain in the 1500m at the Olympics after coming home first and second in Birmingham.

Dobriskey took the gold after coming out on top in a flying sprint finish to win by 0.82sec in a time of four minutes, 15.84sec.

With world champion Christine Ohuruogu running in the 200m and silver medallist Nicola Sanders injured, Lee McConnell won the 400m in their absence in a time of 52.31 to showcase Britain's hopes in the 4x400m relay.

World indoor 60m silver-medallist Jeanette Kwakye won the 100m by just 0.09sec from Montell Douglas as both women booked a trip to China - while Andy Turner is also on his way as winner of the 110m hurdles in 13.58sec.
