France's Alain Bernard clocked a new 100 metres freestyle world record in the semi-finals of the French swimming championships on Thursday.
Olympic champion Bernard beat the previous record of 47.05 set by Australian Eamon Sullivan at the 2008 Olympics by 0.11 seonds.
"To become the first swimmer to go under 47 seconds and in France in front of my fans, that is huge," the 25-year-old Bernard said. "It's impossible to programme a world record, but I always do everything I can to ensure I am the best, and to get the best times. This morning I felt very good in the heats."
