Germany's Andre Lange won a record fourth Olympic gold medal in bobsleigh when he combined with Kevin Kuske to win the two-man event.
The duo, who led at the halfway stage, managed a combined time of three minutes 26.65 seconds for their four runs at the Whistler Sliding Centre.
They finished 0.22 seconds clear of compatriots Thomas Florschuetz and Richard Adjei in Germany II, with Alexsandr Zubkov and Alexey Voevoda in bronze to claim Russia's first medal in the two-man discipline since 1988.
Lange will now look to become the first man to to win three consecutive golds in the four-man bosleigh at the weekend.
Swiss success
Michael Schmid became the first man to ever win a gold in the men's ski cross - a new event making its Winter Olympics debut in 2010.
The Swiss skier held off the challenge of Austrian Andreas Matt with Norway's Audun Groenveld gifted the bronze after home favourite Chris Del Bosco crashed out when in third place.
Russian Evgeny Ustyugov won the men's biathlon 15km mass start race with Magdalena Neuner of Germany taking gold in the women's 12.5km event.
On the track, speed skater Ireen Wust of Holland secured gold in the ladies' 1500m at the Richmond Olympic Oval, posting a time of one minute 56.89 seconds.
Canada's Kristina Groves ended up with the silver with Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic adding bronze to her gold in the 3,000m race.
Hopes of another gold for the hosts were boosted when Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir moved into the lead in the pairs ice skating after the original dance programme.
The duo scored 68.4 points at the Pacific Coliseum with their flamenco for an overall total of 111.15 ahead of Monday's concluding free dance.
Previous leaders Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin of Russia are now in third place behind Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the USA. British pairing John and Sinead Kerr scored 56.76 points to sit in eighth place.
