The first gold medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games has gone to China.
Shooter Yi Siling won the women's 10-metre air rifle title on Saturday morning at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.
The 23-year-old world number one and gold medal favourite lived up to her billing by beating Poland's Sylwia Bogacka into second.
Bogacka, 30, qualified in first place and was leading until the eighth shot, when a wayward effort condemned her to silver.
China's Yu Dan collected the bronze medal with Beijing gold medallist Katrina Emmons fourth.
Brit disappointment
Great Britain's Jennifer McIntosh failed to make the final after she registered a disappointing score of 392 to finish 36th in the morning's qualifier.
The 21-year-old Scot, who is the youngest member of the shooting squad, was happy with her performance in what was her first Olympic experience, however, and she quickly turned her attention to next Saturday's 50m rifle three positions event.
She said: "I was not wearing my socks today. They are worn out. They have massive holes in them. Maybe they will come out for the next event.
"That's probably my stronger event, I would say, so I hope I can make the final.
"If I do make the final then who knows what will happen?"
On Sunday Russian-born Elena Allen will represent Britain in the women's skeet and part-time Devon barmaid Georgina Geikie will take part in the women's 10m air pistol.
Jong Joy
Meanwhile South Korean shooter Jin Jong Oh survived a bout of the jitters to seal gold with his final shot in the men's 10m air pistol.
The 32-year-old, a silver medallist in the same event at Beijing four years ago, went one better this time by narrowly holding off the charge of Luca Tesconi.
Jin held a 4.4-point lead at the halfway stage of the final but, after a flying start, suddenly lost his range while his Italian rival closed the gap to 1.3.
But with his last effort, Jin scored a near-perfect 10.8 points to seal gold and leave Tesconi with silver.
Andrija Zlatic of Serbia took the bronze medal with reigning Olympic champion Pang Wei of China fourth.
