Olympics - Tuesday August 7

Follow the match with Sky Sports' live text commentary

Last Updated: 12/08/12 10:35am

Good morning and welcome to the final day of the London Olympics. The modern pentathlon is already underway and Team GB have medal hopes with Mhairi Spence. The men's marathon wraps up the athletics programme and kicks off at 11am on the Mall. We also have boxing this afternoon with two gold medal hopes in Fred Evans and Anthony Joshua. There are also gold medals to be decided in basketball, handball, handball, water polo, wrestling and mountain bike.

And on that note, we are going to call it a day with the text commentary. Thanks for your company on (another) golden day for Team GB and join us again bright and early tomorrow for more of the same. Good night.Boxing: But no, that's not how the judges see it. Clayton took the final round 6-4, making it 14-14 overall but Evans gets the nod on countback. Evans advances to the semi-finals and is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal.Boxing: Both fighters empty the tank in the final round, think Clayton might have done enough...Boxing: Clayton right back in this, winning the second round 6-3. Evans' advantage is cut to 10-8 heading out for the final three minutes.Boxing: Evans, the reigning European champion, dominated the first round, much quicker to the punch than Clayton and leads 7-2.Football: Brazil will play Mexico for the gold medal in the men's football after beating South Korea 3-0 at Old Trafford tonight.Boxing: Selby went for it in the final round but was picked off on the counter by Ramirez Carrazana. The round was scored 4-4 giving the Cuban a 16-11 win. The fight was lost for Selby in the second round, which Ramirez Carrazana took 7-3. There is another Welsh fighter, Freddie Evans, to come tonight in the quarter-finals of the welterweight division against Canada's Custio Clayton.Boxing: Ireland are guaranteed at least a bronze in the men's flyweight after Michael Conlan came from behind to beat Frenchman Nordine Oubaali 22-18. GB flyweight Andrew Selby is in the ring against Cuban Robeisy Ramirez Carrazana at the moment. Selby trails 12-7 heading into the final round.Athletics: Great quote from Britain's high jump bronze medalist Robbie Grabarz: "I had just been wasting too much time and I wasn't applying myself. At the end of the year my coach (Fuzz Ahmed) sat me down and said 'you're wasting your time and my time'. He told me to go away and sort myself out or don't come back. Here I am and I've got a medal."Athletics: Men's 1500m final full result: 1 Taoufik Makhloufi (Alg) 3mins 34.08secs, 2 Leonel Manzano (USA) 3:34.79 (SB), 3 Abdalaati Iguider (Mar) 3:35.13, 4 Matthew Centrowitz (USA) 3:35.17, 5 Henrik Ingebrigtsen (Nor) 3:35.43 (NR), 6 Mekonnen Gebremedhin (Eth) 3:35.44, 7 Silas Kiplagat (Ken) 3:36.19, 8 Ilham Tanui Ozbilen (Tur) 3:36.72, 9 Nicholas Willis (Nzl) 3:36.94, 10 Belal Mansoor Ali (Brn) 3:37.98, 11 Nixon Kiplimo Chepseba (Ken) 3:39.04, 12 Asbel Kiprop (Ken) 3:43.83Athletics: Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi hits the front with 250m to go and accelerates away to take a dominant victory in the 1,500m final. Where did that come from? This is a great story, he was initially removed from this final for not trying in his 800m heat yesterday. He then produced a doctor's note to say he was injured and was reinstated for the 1,500m final. Didn't look too injured in the that last lap.Athletics: Now for the last final of the night in the Olympic Stadium, the men's 1,500m...Weightlifting: Men's +105kg full result: 1 Behdad Salimikordasiabi (Iri) 455, 2 Sajjad Anoushiravani Hamlabad (Iri) 449, 3 Ruslan Albegov (Rus) 448, 4 Sang-Guen Jeon (Kor) 436, 5 Irakli Turmanidze (Geo) 433, 6 Ihor Shymechko (Ukr) 429, 7 Jiri Orsag (Cze) 426, 8 Almir Velagic (Ger) 426, 9 Yauheni Zharnasek (Blr) 426, 10 Shih-Chieh Chen (Tpe) 418, 11 Peter Nagy (Hun) 416, 12 Fernando Saraiva Reis (Bra) 400, 13 Kazuomi Ota (Jpn) 400, 14 Itte Detenamo (Nru) 390, 15 Christian Alberto Lopez Bobadilla (Gua) 387, 16 Damon Kelly (Aus) 381, 17 Frederic Fokejou Tefot (Cmr) 362, 18 Carl Henriquez (Aru) 282, Matthias Steiner (Ger)Weightlifting: Iranian Behdad Salimikordasiabi, from Iran, wins gold in the men's +105kg.Athletics: Women's 100m final full result: 1 Sally Pearson (Aus) 12.35secs (OR), 2 Dawn Harper (USA) 12.37 (PB), 3 Kellie Wells (USA) 12.48 (PB), 4 Lolo Jones (USA) 12.58 (SB), 5 Nevin Yanit (Tur) 12.58 (NR), 6 Phylicia George (Can) 12.65 (=PB), 7 Jessica Zelinka (Can) 12.69, 8 Beate Schrott (Aut) 13.07Athletics: Pearson builds a comfortable lead heading into the final two barriers of the women's 100m hurdles final but Harper closes fast as the finish line approaches. Pearson has to wait for confirmation of her victory and, when it comes, she squeals with delight (and I mean squeal) before collapsing on her back on the track. Great scenes. Her winning time of 12.35s is a new Olympic record. Even more impressive given the final was run in heavy rain. Pearson makes sprint hurdling look so easy, poetry in motion.Athletics: Men's discus final full result: 1 Robert Harting (Ger) 68.27m, 2 Ehsan Hadadi (Iri) 68.18, 3 Gerd Kanter (Est) 68.03 (SB), 4 Virgilijus Alekna (Ltu) 67.38, 5 Piotr Malachowski (Pol) 67.19, 6 Martin Wierig (Ger) 65.85, 7 Yennifer Frank Casanas (Spa) 65.56, 8 Vikas Gowda (Ind) 64.79, 9 Benn Harradine (Aus) 63.59, 10 Erik Cadee (Ned) 62.78, 11 Jorge Y Fernandez (Cub) 62.02, 12 Lawrence Okoye (Gbr) 61.03Athletics: What's going on in the men's discus final I hear you ask? Well, I can tell you Robert Harting has added the Olympic title to his world crown. The German's gold-medal throw was 68.27m.Athletics: The women's 100m finalists are out on the track. Can Pearson do it for Australia? A world record perhaps?Hockey: Great Britain's men have made it through to the semi-finals after holding on for a 1-1 draw with Spain at the Riverbank Arena. The Netherlands await in the last four. It is the first time GB have been this far since they won gold in Seoul in 1988.Athletics: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Murielle Ahoure, Carmelita Jeter also qualified automatically in second place in their respective heats. Semoy Hackett and Myriam Soumare made it through to Wednesday's final as fastest losers. Britain's Margaret Adeoye was seventh in the first semi-final in 23.28 and Abi Oyepitan sixth in the third semi-final in 23.14.Athletics: Veronica Campbell-Brown, Allyson Felix and Sanya Richards-Ross each win their 200m semi-finals.Athletics: Kynard, who PB is 2.34m, asks for the bar to be raised to 2.40m for his final attempt - ambitious. Too ambitious as it turns out, he knocks off the bar to confirm Russia's Ivan Ukhov as the new Olympic high jump champion. Ukhov is congratulated by Kynard and is going to have a go at 2.40m himself, which would be an Olympic record. Ukhov fails and decides enough is enough, he won't take his second and third attempts and instead sets off on a lap of honour.Athletics: Ukhov clears 2.38m at the first time of asking and then has to watch as Kynard takes his final attempt...Diving: Full result of the men's 3m springboard: 1 Ilya Zakharov (Rus) 555.90 pts, 2 Kai Qin (Chn) 541.75, 3 Chong He (Chn) 524.15, 4 Patrick Hausding (Ger) 505.55, 5 Troy Dumais (USA) 498.35, 6 Yahel Castillo Huerta (Mex) 492.70, 7 Ethan Warren (Aus) 488.95, 8 Illya Kvasha (Ukr) 462.25, 9 Chris Mears (Gbr) 439.75, 10 Ken Nee Yeoh (Mas) 437.45, 11 Alexandre Despatie (Can) 413.35, 12 Javier Illana Garcia (Spa) 371.60Diving: Russia's Ilya Zakharov has won gold in the men's 3m springboard. GB's Chris Mears finished ninth.Athletics: Nieto not even close. BRONZE! Grabarz, Barshim and Drouin will all get bronze medals in the high jump. Ukhov and Kynard left to fight it out for gold and silver. Ukhov is clear at 2.36m, Kynard failed his first attempt and has now decided to move the bar up to 2.38m for his second attempt.Athletics: Ukhov, back in his vest now, has just gone clear at 2.36m to take the lead in the high jump. Nieto is about to take his last attempt, if he fails Grabarz will win a bronze (as will Barshim and Drouin)...Athletics: Grabarz is gone, again taking the bar off with his calves on his third attempt at 2.33m. He would share the bronze with two others - Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim and Canada's Derek Drouin - if USA's Jamie Nieto does not clear his next height (Nieto has failed twice at 2.33m and has passed his third attempt).Football: Goalless between South Korea and Brazil at Old Trafford in the second men's semi-final. Mexico await in the final.Athletics: Ethiopia's Mohammed Aman wins the third of the men's 800m semi-finals in 1:44.34. Kenyan Timothy Kitum is the other automatic qualifier.USA's Duane Solomon is third in 1:44.93 and makes it as a fastest loser, as does his compatriot Nick Symmonds, who finished third in the second semi-final in 1:44.87.Athletics: Grabarz's calves knock the bar off on his second attempt at 2.33m. One chance left for the Briton, who set a PB of 2.36m earlier in the season. Still only two clear at 2.33m.Athletics: Grabarz's first failure of the night comes at 2.33m, he still has two more chances. There are two men - USA's Erik Kynard and Ivan Ukhov of Russia (who has changed from a vest to a loose fitting tee-shirt!) - who cleared 2.33m at the first attempt.Athletics: Okoye will not make it through to the final three throws of the discus final. His third effort is 60.11m, which means he will finish in 12th of the 12 finalists. I think that's called a learning experience. Hadadi still leads the way with 68.18m.Athletics: Osagie's time was 1:44.74. He looked shocked as he crossed the line. That was relatively comfortable for him in the end, impressive run.Athletics: Rudisha dominates the second semi-final from the front to win in 1:44.35. Good news for GB, Andrew Osagie comes through in the home straight for second place to earn his spot in Thursday's final.Athletics: Sudan's Abubaker Kaki wins the first of three semi-finals in the men's 800m in 1:44.51. Botswana's Nijel Amos claimed the other automatic qualification spot. Britain's Andrew Osagie and world champion and world record holder David Rudisha go in the second. Top two in each semi plus the two fastest losers qualify for the final.Athletics: Iran's Ehsan Hadadi is the early leader in the discus with a first-round effort of 68.18m. Okoye makes a mess of his second-round attempt and has just one throw left to move into the top-eight cut-off for three more throws.Athletics: Defending champion Silnov is gone from the high jump after three straight failures at 2.29m, never came close.Hockey: GB dominating Spain at the Riverbank Arena and lead 1-0 at half-time thanks to Jackson's strike - they have missed a few chances to add to that. Draw enough to see them through.Athletics: It is not actually raining at the moment but conditions are damp underfoot for the high jumpers due to earlier showers. Grabarz looks good, clearing 2.29m at the first attempt. Two jumps and two clearances for the Briton. There are six men clear at 2.29m so far but defending champion Andrey Silnov has failed twice...Athletics: Okoye is the second thrower to go in the men's discus final and he sends it out to 61.03m.Football: A late strike from substitute Javier Cortes completed a 3-1 win for Mexico over Japan in the men's semi-final at Wembley. The other semi, between Brazil and South Korea, is about to kick-off at Old Trafford.Water polo: GB's women sunk to a 11-9 defeat against Russia. They will now be in the seventh/eighth place play-off.Hockey: Ashley Jackson has put GB ahead against Spain at the Riverbank Arena. The host nation need a draw to qualify for the knockout phase.Wrestling: South Korea's Kim Hyeon-Woo has won gold in the -66kg Greco-Roman wrestling. He beat Tamas Lorincz of Hungary in the final. Bronzes for Georgia's Manuchar Tskhadaia and Frenchman Steeve Guenot.Athletics: Women's long jump qualifying is going on but Shara Proctor's night is already over, the Briton needed just one jump, 6.83m, to secure her place in the final.Athletics: USA's Kellie Wells wins the third semi-final of the women's 100m in 12.51s, Nevin Yanit of Turkey second in 12.58 and there is bad news for Porter as Canada's Phylicia George finished third in 12.65s. George and Jones advance to the final as the two fastest losers.Athletics: Grabarz enters the high jump final at 2.25m and sails over.Athletics: Australia's Sally Pearson lays down her marker, winning the second semi-final of the women's 100m in 12.39s, the fastest in the world this year. Jessica Zelinka of Canada, who was seventh in the heptathlon, also qualifies in 12.66s. GB's Tiffany Porter was fourth in 12.79s, which currently makes her the second fastest loser with one semi-final still to go. USA's Lolo Jones was third in 12.71s and is also in line to qualify at the moment.Athletics: Dawn Harper storms to victory in 12.46s in the first of three semis in the women's 100m hurdles. Top two plus two fastest losers make the final. Austria's Beate Schrott took the other automatic qualification spot from the opening semi. Jamaica's Shermaine Williams was third in 12.83s and Alina Talay of Belarus fourth in 12.84s.Beach volleyball: May-Treanor and Walsh are one win away from a third straight beach volleyball title. The USA pair saw off Chinese duo Chen and Zhang in straight sets - 22-20, 22-20 in 44 minutes. There is plenty going on elsewhere, including Chris Mears in the 3m springboard final, GB v Spain in the men's hockey and boxers Andrew Selby and Freddie Evans in quarter-final action.Athletics: There is British interest in both of tonight's field finals. Robbie Grabarz goes in the high jump and Lawrence Okoye in the discus. Tiffany Porter is GB's representative in second semi-final of the 100m hurdles, which also features world champion Sally Pearson. The final of that one follows at 2100. There is also the women's 200m and men's 800m semis and the action concludes at 2115 with one of the blue-riband events, the men's 1,500m.Athletics: After a golden afternoon in the velodrome, our attention now turns to the Olympic Stadium for an evening of top-notch athletics.Medal table: Great Britain now have 22 gold medals, only eight golds behind second-placed USA. China lead the way on 34.Football: Oribe Peralta has put Mexico 2-1 ahead in their men's semi-final against Japan at Wembley with a 65th-minute strike. South Korea play Brazil (1945 KO) in the other semi-final at Old Trafford.Cycling: Hoy: "I'm 99.9 per cent sure I won't be competing in Rio...Glasgow is another question, as that would be the dream ending for me."Beach volleyball: Two-time defending Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of USA take the opening set of their semi-final against Chinese pair Xue Chen and Zhang Xi 22-20 in 22 minutes.Football: Midway through the second half at Wembley in the men's semi-final and it's still 1-1 between Japan and Mexico.Cycling: Britain won seven of the 10 events in the velodrome (plus one silver and one bronze), equalling their golden haul from Beijing four years ago.Cycling: Hoy is hugged by every member of the British support staff and then takes in the applause of the crowd. Is that the last time we see Hoy at the Olympics? Probably, hard to see him carrying on past the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in two years time. He is only Briton to win six Olympic golds, trumping his fellow Knight of the Realm, Sir Steve Redgrave. His career total of seven medals is level with fellow cyclist Bradley Wiggins on the British all-time list - but Hoy has more golds.Cycling: Levy looked like he might have a chance going down the back straight on the last lap but Hoy held his position on the inside and held off the challenge with relative ease. Levy takes silver for Germany and New Zealander Simon van Velthooven and Teun Mulder of the Netherlands share the bronze. Even the photo finish technology couldn't split them.Cycling: Gold! Hoy wins gold in the men's keirin, his second of these Games and sixth of his Olympic career. He went for a long one, just as he did in the semi-final, and it ended with the same result.Cycling: The derny pulls off, Levy and Awang ahead of Hoy...Cycling: Hoy sitting in third with five laps to go. Levy is right on the wheel of the derny.Cycling: Hoy won this event four years ago, one of his five Olympic golds.Cycling: I've wiped away the tear from my eye and refocused for the men's keirin final. Can Hoy provide a golden send-off for Britain in the men's keirin final? This is the last event of these Games in the velodrome.Cycling: Pendleton congratulates Meares and, after initially appearing quite composed, then breaks down in tears after doing a farewell lap for the crowd. Pendleton waves goodbye, she is heading off into retirement with two Olympic golds and a silver. Not a bad career, the trailblazer for the generation of female cyclists in Britain, such as Trott, coming through now.Cycling: Pendleton went for a long one but couldn't make it, Meares overtaking on the outside and pulling away, even having enough time to give the victory salute before she crossed the line. The Australian wins 2-0 and takes Olympic gold, the second of her career eight year after the first in the now discontinued 500m time-trial in Athens. Pendleton's career ends with silver.Cycling: Pendleton and Meares back on track for race two. The Briton is in the last-chance saloon.Cycling: Trott talking about her parents: "I couldn't have done it without them. The amount of money they had to put in when I was younger, taking me here, there and everywhere, and my dad gave up his cricket."Football: The men's semi-final between Mexico and Japan is 1-1 late in the first half. Yuki Otsu opened the scoring for Japan after 12 minutes. Marco Fabian headed Mexico level on 31 minutes from a corner, the first goal Japan have conceded at these Olympics.Cycling: Trott, who is about to receive her second gold medal of the Games, had this to say after her omnium victory: "I can't believe this has happened to me... I'm peaking at the right time and it's all thanks to the coaches and the support of the crowd. I'm so happy I can't thank people enough."Cycling: Just seen the replay and it's a marginal call but Pendleton did come up and cross the red line (which she can't do) and there was contact as Meares leaned in with the elbow.Cycling: Not so fast! The judges have relegated Pendleton for coming out of the racing line coming out of the final corner. Meares gets the win and leads 1-0.Cycling: The cheers in the velodrome tell us that Pendleton has got the verdict - and by a margin of 0.001s! Even on the replays it is impossible to tell. 1-0 to Pendleton.Cycling: Pendleton leads out the sprint and holds the inside line into the home straight. Meares comes hard round the outside, she wobbles as they almost come together, and they cross the line together. Can't call that with the naked eye...Cycling: Pendleton and Meares on track now for the opening race of the best-of-three sprint final...Medal table: Team GB now have 21 gold medals, a post-war record. They are only nine behind second-placed USA in the medal table.Cycling: Trott adds the Olympic title to her world crown in the omnium. She has two golds at these Games and Britain have six in the velodrome from eight events - and there is still Hoy and Pendleton to come in the last two finals.Cycling: GOLD! Trott wins gold for Great Britain in the women's omnium! Trott stops the clock at 35.110s, compared to Hammer's 35.900s. That is enough for Trott to win the 500m time-trial and, with Hammer down in fourth, means she leapfrogs to the top of the final ominium standings. Hammer has to settle for silver, Edmondson takes bronze.Cycling: Trott must finish three places above Hammer to claim gold, or two places ahead and beat her by 0.69s in this event. Australia's Annette Edmondson's 35.140s is the quickest time so far.Cycling: Hammer and Trott are in their starting gates.Gymnastics: Full result from the women's floor final: 1 Alexandra Raisman (USA) 15.600, 2 Catalina Ponor (Rou) 15.200, 3 Aliya Mustafina (Rus) 14.900, 4 Vanessa Ferrari (Ita) 14.900, 5 Lauren Mitchell (Aus) 14.833, 6 Kseniia Afanaseva (Rus) 14.566, 7 Jordyn Wieber (USA) 14.500, 8 Sandra Raluca Izbasa (Rou) 13.333Gymnastics: Alexandra Raisman of USA wins floor gold for USA.Table tennis: China's women win gold in the table tennis team competition. They beat Japan 3-0 in the final. Singapore saw off South Korea by the same scoreline to clinch bronze.Cycling: Trott, going for her second gold of the Games after victory as part of the team pursuit earlier in the programme, is next up in the final event of the omnium, the 500m time-trial. She trails Hammer of the USA by two points. This is arguably her strongest event. They go in pairs, reverse order, meaning Trott and Hammer are together in the final heat (starting from opposite sides of the track).Equestrian: Nice quote from dressage gold medalist Laura Bechtolsheimer about her GB team-mates: "I think Charlotte (Dujardin) and I compete for who does the dumbest blonde thing and Carl (Hester) patronises us like children. We have a great time."Cycling: Line-up for the men's keirin final: Hoy (GB), Awang (May), Mulder (Ned), Levy (Ger), Van Velthooven (NZ) and Perkins (Aus). The man will set off on his derny bike at 1747.Cycling: Germany's Maximilian Levy won the second semi-final of the men's keirin. New Zealander Simon van Velthooven and Australia's Shane Perkins also qualified. Frenchman Mickael Bourgain missed out.Cycling: Malaysia's Azizulhasni Awang and Tuen Mulder of the Netherlands were the other qualifiers along with Hoy from the first semi-final of the men's keirin.Equestrian: Here is the full result from the team dressage, which was Britain's 20th gold, a post-war record eclipsing their haul in Beijing four years ago. Result: 1 Great Britain 80.550 pts, 2 Germany 77.587, 3 Netherlands 77.439, 4 Denmark 73.847, 5 Sweden 73.471, 6 Spain 72.106, 7 United States 72.069Synchronised Swimming: Russia have won the gold medal in the duet final.Cycling: Hoy leads all the way through to the line. Nobody came close. Highly impressive way to qualify for the final, which takes place at 1747 (BST).Cycling: Hoy hits the front with two laps to go.Cycling: Spain's Juan Peralta Gascon hits the deck after his pedal appears to break almost immediately. The officials stop the race and order a restart. They are inspecting the track for damage first.Cycling: Now time for the semi-finals of the men's keirin and Sir Chris Hoy goes in the first.Cycling: Pendleton and Meares have about an hour to recover before the opening heat of the best-of-three final. Shaung and Vogel will race off for the bronze.Cycling: And she will face her great rival Meares in the final after the Aussie came round the outside to seal a 2-0 win in her semi against Shaung. It is a repeat of the final in Beijing four years ago and we all know how that one ended...Cycling: Another British medal now guaranteed as Pendleton sees off Vogel again for a 2-0 win in their sprint semi-final.Equestrian: Britain's Laura Bechtolsheimer, Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester have won the gold medal in the dressage team competition. Britain's first Olympics dressage medal.Cycling: Laura Trott trails USA's Sarah Hammer by two points with one event remaining in the women's omnium after finishing third in the scratch race.Synchronised swimming: To confirm Olivia Federici and Jenna Randall finished ninth in the synchronized swimming.Gymnastics: Zonderland stunned the crowd at the North Greenwich Arena with an electric performance on the horizontal bar to win Olympic gold.Synchronised Swimming: Duets Free Routine - Final Gold: Russian Fed.
