Jockey Cam Hardie rode the biggest winner of his career as Tupi lowered the track record in the King Charles II Stakes.

Hardie, 19, was unable to take advantage of his 3lb apprentices' claim as it was a Listed race.

But the rider showed composure beyond his years as he managed to implement Plan B and judge the pace to perfection with a front-running ride aboard the 5/1 shot.

The Richard Hannon-trained Tamayuz colt was kept company by Markaz for much of the seven-furlong race before the favourite Latharnach launched a sustained late challenge.

But Tupi had enough in the locker to repel all-comers, finishing with half a length to spare from the Godolphin horse. Markaz took third place.

Hardie said: "Things didn't go to plan - he jumped very well for me and couldn't get any cover.

"I heard he broke the track record, so he must have done it impressively.

"Thanks to connections for allowing me to ride him without my claim. The trainer has given me a lot of opportunities and I'm trying to repay him."

On a day when there was a brisk tail-wind, the time of 1m 21.98 seconds broke the track record for seven furlongs, set just over an hour earlier by Firmdecisions.
