Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott will lead the United States at the next Rugby League World Cup in 2017.

McDermott first took the role last summer on a part-time basis and lead the USA to qualification for the tournament after he managed them to wins over Jamaica and Canada in December.

"I'm very pleased to have been invited to continue my role with the USARL and to take the Hawks to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup," McDermott said.

The Leeds coach, who has won three Super League titles with his current club and also a World Club Challenge in 2012, knows the team require more work in the future.

He added: "What's already been achieved is the result of a lot of hard work and commitment with much more preparation required."

"I'm looking forward to working alongside a dedicated group of people that have demonstrated the desire to succeed and are willing to make the necessary changes in order to adapt."

USARL chairman Peter Illfield wants the USA to build on their current rugby league status and sees McDermott as the ideal man to do that.

"Brian's involvement has had a profound impact on our players wanting to improve their rugby league skills at both home and abroad," he said.

He added: "We're thrilled that he values the type of culture and organisation that we're building in the USA. The sport will only get better here from now on."

Sean Rutgerson, who played for South Africa in the 2000 World Cup and also had spells at North Sydney Bears, Canberra Raiders, Salford City Reds and Jacksonville Axemen, will continue as McDermott's assistant.
