David Kidwell has been appointed as New Zealand's new head coach after three years as Stephen Kearney's assistant.

Kearney quit the Kiwis this week to become head coach at the New Zealand Warriors NRL club.

NZRL chief executive Alex Hayton said Kidwell's appointment was part of a long-term succession plan.

"He has contributed to the development of the Kiwis team culture, brings continuity and certainty to the playing group over the next 14 months, leading into the Rugby League World Cup," Hayton said.

Kidwell, who played 24 Tests for New Zealand, including a 2008 World Cup win, said he wanted to maintain the winning culture Kearney had established.

"I want to make sure that is upheld and becomes even stronger, that's the message I'll be giving to our senior players," he said.

"That passion for the black-and-white jersey is paramount."
