The annual ANZAC Test between Australia and New Zealand had to be postponed because of a saturated pitch.

The clash at Suncorp Stadium was called off following heavy rain over the past 24 hours which left the pitch drenched and has been rearranged for Sunday.

The NRL had already called off the two curtain-raisers and took the decision to postpone a Test match featuring the Kangaroos in Australia for the first time less than an hour before the scheduled kick-off.

According to NRL statistician David Middleton, the only other international involving Australia to be postponed was the third Ashes Test against Great Britain at Bradford in 1948 that fell victim to fog.

"There were a number of considerations for this decision, primarily player safety as well as that of our supporters," NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said.

Heavy showers have hit south-east Queensland for the past 24 hours, flooding Brisbane suburbs, cutting motorways and disrupting public transport.
