Huddersfield have signed forward Daniel Smith from Wakefield on a four-and-a-half year contract, with Ireland international Anthony Mullally joining the Wildcats on a short-term loan as part of the deal.

Former Widnes front-rower Mullally, 23, has signed a three-year contract with Leeds starting next season, but will spend the next three months helping the Wildcats in their battle to avoid relegation after losing his place in the Giants team.

Smith, however, will join Huddersfield with immediate effect and could make his debut in Saturday's Super League game against Catalans Dragons in Perpignan.

Castleford-born Smith came through the Leeds academy before moving to Australia and made 24 appearances for South Sydney Rabbitohs' Under-20s team.

Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis said Smith was originally due to move from Wakefield from the start of next season but the clubs agreed to bring it forward.

St Helens needed a Luke Walsh drop goal to earn a late 35-34 win over Huddersfield at Langtree Park.

"We have an excellent relationship with (chairman) Michael Carter at Wakefield and had agreed some time ago with him for Daniel Smith to become a Giant in 2016 and beyond," Thewlis said.

"Wakefield approached us to talk about ideas for new faces for their squad and obviously we were keen to get Daniel into our environment as soon as possible and, with Anthony having decided to move on longer term from the club, a deal was struck to the end of the year which suited all.

"Anthony leaves with our very best wishes for the future and I am sure that our fans will look forward to Daniel putting a claret and gold shirt on in the near future."
