Super League matches at Hull KR, Wakefield, Leeds and St Helens postponed due to snow

The Betfred Super League matches between Hull KR and Castleford, Wakefield and Huddersfield, Leeds and Catalans Dragons and St Helens and Salford have all been postponed due to the adverse weather.

The fixtures at Hull KR and Wakefield were scheduled to be screened live on Sky Sports on Thursday and Friday respectively, and Sky Sports will now broadcast Friday's clash between Hull FC and Warrington, which is set to go ahead.

Hull KR called off their fixture against Castleford on Thursday after a 10am inspection at KCOM Craven Park.

The decision was made following a meeting between the RFL's match commissioner, the ground safety officer and representatives from the club and Hull City Council.

The pitch has been protected throughout the week, but there were concerns regarding player welfare with temperatures predicted to reach minus-six.

It was also felt that the pathways in and around the ground, car parking facilities and journeys to and from the stadium posed a risk to home and away supporters.

An announcement about the rearranged date for the fixture is expected to be made on Monday.

Wakefield have, though, already rearranged their match against Huddersfield for 3pm on Sunday.

Trinity were hoping to clear the snow from their Mobile Rocket Stadium pitch on Thursday morning to enable the match to be played on Friday evening, but they were forced to admit defeat due to safety concerns.

They have now appealed for volunteers to arrive at the ground at 10am on Saturday morning, armed with snow shovels, to help clear the snow and make some areas safe so the game can be played on Sunday.

The pitch at Headingley would have been playable for the Leeds Rhinos versus Catalans Dragons game due to undersoil heating.

But the decision was made to call off Friday's game on Thursday morning because of safety concerns with more snow predicted.

The Dragons were told not to travel from France and a rearranged date for the match will be announced in due course.

Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington said: "Postponing a game is not a decision that is taken lightly and it is something that has happened on only a handful of occasions in the past 20 years.

"I would like to thank the RFL and Catalans Dragons for their co-ordination on this matter. We have taken the decision early because there is no sign of the situation improving according to forecasts."

St Helens held a noon pitch inspection on Thursday ahead of their match against Salford and it was decided the game could not be played on Friday evening as parts of the playing surface remain frozen, although they are now hoping to play it on Sunday at 4pm.

A statement issued by the club on Thursday afternoon read: "There will be a pitch inspection on Sunday at 10am and then a further one at 12 noon.

"With the current forecast so changeable we are making all efforts to get the game on. At present, if the pitch is playable then the fixture will kick off at 4pm. This decision is to allow the pitch the greatest chance to thaw.

"We fully understand the disruption this may cause fans but with a very busy fixture list both clubs are keen to get the game on if we can this weekend."

Meanwhile, a pitch inspection has been called at Wigan's DW Stadium for 5pm on Thursday ahead of the Warriors' game against Widnes on Friday night.
