New Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson refused to be too downbeat despite his side's 46-12 Super League defeat at his former club St Helens.
The Giants have now lost nine of their last 10 games, but Anderson insisted:"Offensively we made some good strides but defensively we have to believe in our systems.
"Some of our defence was poor and we have to learn lessons from this. We have to be more consistent and need to look at basic fundamentals.
"My job is to get them playing well. I thought we could still win the game at half-time with a gale force wind in our favour and I hope the players thought that as well.
"We were a little bit lateral at times but there were some good performances and Larne Patrick was strong."
The win saw St Helens extend their unbeaten run to seven matches and moved back into third in the Super League standings.
Interim coach Mike Rush reserved special praise for his two match-winners.
"Lance was man of the match at Catalan last week and is an international player of high quality," he said.
"Tommy deserves his place and Ade Gardner is going to have to work hard when he's fit to wrestle the shirt off him.
"We spoke about our discipline and that was much better and it has to be to push for honours.
"We clocked off for 10 minutes at the back end of the first half and need to be more ruthless.
"I don't want to moan after a good win but a couple of times our skill level could have been better.
"James Roby is constantly outstanding every week and he and Cameron Smith are the best two hookers in the world."
