Super League: St Helens season preview

Saints focus on forward thinking with new additions to their pack; half-backs could be key to their hopes for success this season...

It was something of a year of transition in 2013 for Saints, their first under Nathan Brown. Now the Australian has his feet under the table and has looked to add power up front to aid their trophy push.

PHIL CLARKE PREDICTS: 5th

A total of 11 losses and a draw was classed as an unsuccessful season for the Saints, but their hopes and aspirations are a bit higher than they were 12 months ago. Arguably their best player from last season, James Roby only played in half of their games. If he ends this year as an ever-present his team will finish higher up the table. PLAYER to WATCH: Luke Walsh arrives with a great deal of pressure on his shoulders, as well as in his hands, feet and head. He needs to do the passing, kicking and thinking for the Saints this season. The main 'play-maker' in every team gets too much blame and too much credit in my eyes. However, if the Saints go marching into Old Trafford in October, I suspect it will be because he's joined all the parts of the team together.
