Wakefield prop eligible to play for country through Serbian mother

Wakefield prop Liam Higgins has been named in Serbia's initial for this autumn's 2013 World Cup European Zone qualifiers. 28-year-old Higgins, the former Hull and Castleford forward, qualifies for the country through his Serbian mother. Oldham hooker Austen Novakovic and brothers James and Luke Simeunovic, from Halifax amateur club Siddal, also feature. The former Whitehaven forward Soni Radovanovic is the vice-captain. Marko Jankovic, Serbia's head coach, has chosen largely domestic club players in his 45-strong squad, including 14 from champions Dorcol Spiders. Serbia play a warm-up game against Ukraine on September 30 in Belgrade, before embarking on their World Cup qualifying campaign with matches against Russia and Italy.
