Warrington coach Tony Smith hailed Sam Wilde as "a real star in the making" after the forward scored his first try for the club during the Wolves' nine-try rout over Castleford on Sunday.

Wilde, 19, added Warrington's eighth try of the match, which ended in a 44-6 victory, and Smith was quick to praise the teenager as well as the performances of Richie Myler and Gareth O'Brien.

"I've been longing to say this, I thought our kicking game was terrific," Smith said. "I've been critical of that but it was outstanding today.

"Credit where credit is due to Richie Myler and Gareth O'Brien and it was great to see Sam Wilde score his first try. I reckon he will score plenty more. He's a real star in the making. He was picked on merit ahead of some other boys who were available; he's going to be terrific."

Warrington's victory was the perfect preparation for their Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR on Saturday and the start of the Super 8s the following week.

"It's good to perform well, regardless of what's next week or beyond that," Smith added.

"We've performed well for the last four or five weeks, I think we've been building up for a really good performance. I thought my boys played the weather exceptionally well and on attack we had a really good first half.

"That sort of score can happen on any given day if momentum goes against you, it doesn't mean you are a good team or bad team. We've got some confidence about the way we're playing but they didn't give up."
