Warrington coach Tony Smith says full-back Matty Russell is likely to miss the remainder of the season, after suffering a second major ankle injury in four months.

The Scotland international missed 13 matches after hurting his right ankle over Easter and is now facing two months on the sidelines after damaging his left ankle last Sunday.

Smith said: "It's a very similar injury to the last one, although it's the other ankle.

"Today, we'll make a decision on whether we rehab for six weeks and see if it heals or operate and he'll almost definitely be back after about eight weeks.

"The first option is to take a risk and get him back a couple of weeks earlier and he still might need an operation which then could set him back for his off-season.

"So we'll probably opt to have the operation and get him back if we have a good run throughout the Super 8s for some of those important games at the back."

Smith added: "He was in great form on both occasions when he's been injured.

"They're not the standard ankle injuries, he's managed to damage the ligament that goes between the bones and down into the foot each time.

"Whether it's something about the way he runs, we're not sure."
