Warriors defeat Bradford in final to claim second trophy in four days

Wigan claimed their second trophy in four days as they took victory in the Carnegie Floodlit Nines at Headingley on Wednesday. The Warrirors, who clinched the Super League leaders' shield at the weekend, beat a full-strength Bradford side 20-16 in the final of the competition. Centre Ian Thornley, who is switching codes at the end of the season to join Sale Sharks, proved to be the match-winner as he scored two tries in the final Bulls full-back Vinny Finigan scored the opening try of the contest but Ryan King levelled for Wigan and a quick-fire double from Thornley made it 16-6 at the interval. Winger Shaun Ainscough, who has recently been linked with a move to Bradford, ran in a fourth try to put the game beyond his potential future employers.

Rally

Michael Platt and Jason Crooks then narrowed the gap with a try apiece but the rally came too late to alter the outcome of the match. The Bulls had earlier needed sudden death extra time to get past Wakefield in a dramatic semi-final as Paul Sykes converted a last-minute try to tie the scores before Rikki Sherriffe scored the winner. Elsewhere, Scotland and Wales fell to defeat in both of their group matches but Jamaica managed to beat tournament holders Hull FC before bowing out. St Helens' new boy Dan Brotherton ran-in tries in each of his side's group matches and Leeds centre Kallum Watkins marked his return from a serious knee injury with a try in his side's loss to Wakefield. Warrington centre Chris Bridge also made a comeback from injury by scoring a try for the Wolves, who would reach the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Wigan. Meanwhile, Leeds winger Jamal Chisholm retained his title of fastest man in rugby league after holding off Harlequins' Omari Caro in a 96-metre sprint. Saints teenager Brotherton was third.
