Widnes have tied down another of their promising youngsters by extending the contract of second-row forward Liam Walsh until the end of 2021.

Walsh, 19, who made his Super League debut at Leeds just over 12 months ago, has followed fellow academy products Matt Whitley, Brad Walker and Danny Walker in pledging his future to the club.

Widnes coach Denis Betts said: "This signing demonstrates the intent that we have as a group. Liam has lots of potential that needs nurturing and a three-year contract allows us to do that.

"Our young boys are being chased by other clubs because of the potential they have. It has been pleasing to secure a number of long-term renewals."

Walsh, who has played four games this season, told his club's official website: "This is the best club for me to develop in my career. I've been at Widnes since I was a kid and I love it here.

"These are exciting times for the club, with the young players we are bringing through. We've worked together for years now and there is real potential for us to achieve great things in the coming years.

"It was an honour to make my debut for my hometown club last year and I'm looking for more. Having missed the start of the academy season this year with injury, I've been pleased to have come back and shown improvements.
