Quins centre found guilty of biting an opponent

Harlequins centre David Howell was banned for six matches on Tuesday after being found guilty of biting an opponent. The 27-year-old Australian appeared in front of the Rugby Football League's disciplinary committee charged with biting Catalan Dragons scrum-half Remy Marginet in the last minute of Quins' 48-22 defeat in Perpignan on Saturday. With Harlequins only having four matches left of the current season, Howell's suspension will be carried over to next year. He was also fined £300 for the grade E offence, which is ranked alongside gouging and spitting and just below assault of a match official among the game's most serious misdemeanours. Howell, who served a one-match ban earlier this year for a dangerous tackle, was playing his first game for more than two months after recovering from a knee injury. His Harlequins team-mate Oliver Wilkes was given a one-match ban and a £300 fine for a late tackle on Marginet in the same game.

Davies misses out

Meanwhile, St Helens hooker James Roby was cleared to play in Saturday's Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final against Wigan but Castleford forward John Davies will miss Sunday's second semi-final against Leeds after being handed a one-match ban. Davies was given a one-game suspension and a £300 fine after being found guilty of a Grade B offence for dangerous contact on Roby in the same game. Warrington hooker Micky Higham has been suspended for two matches and fined £300 for a dangerous tackle on Bradford centre Paul Sykes in Sunday's 64-6 win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Wakefield prop Liam Higgins received a one-match suspension and £300 fine for a high tackle on Crusaders forward Jordan James in his side's 40-6 defeat by the Welsh club.
