Widnes Vikings have been taken out of administration after being purchased by Chesire businessman Steve O'Connor. The 42-year-old rail freight millionaire and Liverpool FC fan has pledged an initial £250,000 to guarantee the club's immediate future and halt the exodus of star players, and has also paid a "five figure" sum for the Widnes Vikings brand. The club went into administration on October 9 after losing the Grand Final to secure promotion to the Super League. "I would be the first to admit that football is my first love rather than Rugby League, but ultimately I am fiercely passionate about sport and I'm equally passionate about business and the community where I was brought up," O'Connor said. "What has happened to Widnes Rugby League Club over recent years is a tragedy. "It is a fantastic institution which should be competing at the very highest level. "I firmly believe that, with the support of Halton Borough Council, I can put together a team of experienced individuals from the world of business to work alongside talented and successful rugby people to ensure we can bring the glory days back to Widnes. "My goal is to use my wealth and expertise to help put strong foundations in place where Widnes Vikings can flourish and take their rightful place in the Super League elite where they belong."
