Veteran star exchanges sevens for nines

Fijian rugby union star Waisale Serevi will switch codes to play for Fiji UK in the Carnegie Floodlit Nines at Headingley next Wednesday. Serevi is the most decorated Fijian in world rugby with 39 caps between1989 to 2003, but he is probably best known for his Sevens skills. Fiji UK manager Mike Ratu said: "To capture Fiji's greatest ever rugby player is a major accomplishment for us. "He is Fiji's biggest sporting personality and the fact that he has agreed to play for us is a dream come true for our players."

New challenges

Serevi, who recently turned 40, was awarded a sports science honorary doctorate by Leeds Metropolitan University earlier this year and will be a guest at next week's Carnegie Challenge Cup final at Wembley. "I like to take on new challenges and to play for Fiji UK will be a good experience." he said. "Nines rugby is very exciting and I am sure the fans will be in for a real treat." Fiji UK have been drawn against Wakefield in the first round. Other teams taking in the inaugural tournament are Leeds, Huddersfield, Hull, Hull KR, Cumbria, Leeds Metropolitan University and British Army.
