Castleford continue recruitment drive by signing New Zealand forward

Castleford have announced the signing of Sione Faumuina from the North Queensland Cowboys. The 27-year-old, who has won two caps for New Zealand, will join the Tigers on a one-year deal for next season. He started his career Down Under with the Canberra Raiders before returning to his homeland to join the New Zealand Warriors, where he spent five years. Although he has played at stand-off in the NRL, Faumuina is expected to be used in the pack by the engage Super League club. "I'm very pleased to have got Sione on board for next year," Castleford coach Terry Matterson said of his latest recruit.

Real presence

"He will bring us some real presence, he has the size and skill and plenty of experience at the top level in the NRL. "When I was at Canberra we tried to bring him back to the club but he opted to stick with the Warriors. "He is good with the ball, and can play five eighth, but most of his career has been spent in the back row which is where we see him playing." Faumuina has already experienced playing in England having enjoyed a short loan stint at the KC Stadium with Hull FC back in 2005. His signing is the latest move by Castleford to upgrade their playing squad for the 2009 campaign after they were handed a three-year Super League licence. They have captured South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Dean Widderson on a three-year contract as well as bringing in half-back Rangi Chase on a two-year deal from St George-Illawarra.
