Wigan to face Salford test

Gateshead Thunder have been handed a plum home tie with holders St Helens in the quarter-finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup. Thunder, who play in the Co-operative Championship, have never previously been past the fourth round of the competition, but secured their place in the last eight with a 34-16 victory over Oldham on Saturday. They now face a showdown with Super League giants Saints in a money-spinning tie expected to be played at the Gateshead International Stadium. "We won't be taking them lightly," said St Helens coach Mick Potter after his side beat Catalans Dragons to move into the quarters. "This is one where you could trip over if you are not careful. "I would like to think we will have enough to get over them, even though it is away. "I imagine they'll be keen. They have a few names I recognise from back in Australia." Potter will go head to head with former Widnes and Salford coach Steve McCormack, who succeeded Chris Hood at the Gateshead helm in midweek. Gateshead are the only non-Super League club left in the tournament. Elsewhere, Wigan have been paired at home to Salford, Castleford face a trip to Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, while Hull KR will host Warrington. Rovers rather toiled to a 34-24 triumph over Sheffield Eagles on Sunday as Warrington enjoyed a 56-8 rout of Featherstone. Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-finals:
(Ties to be played on the weekend of May 29-31) Hull KR v Warrington
Huddersfield v Castleford
