Sam Obst has signed a new two-year contract with Wakefield that will run until the end of the 2011 campaign.

Australian happy to extend his stay at Belle Vue

Sam Obst has pledged his future to Wakefield by signing a new two-year deal with the Super League club. The Australian, who can play in either half-back position or at hooker, will now remain with the Wildcats until the end of the 2011 campaign. The 28-year-old arrived at Belle Vue back in 2005 from Whitehaven having previously played for Sydney Roosters and West Tigers Down Under. Obst believes the club can continue to go from strength to strength in the top flight having qualified for the play-offs this year.

Connection

"I've been here for a long time and you build a connection with the people at the club and I'm happy to stay," he said on the club's website. "Super League gets harder and harder each year but with the new blokes coming over I think it will be another good couple of years for the club." Wildcats coach John Kear has hailed Obst's new contract as "excellent news" and feels the player can continue to improve in the coming years. "Sam has been playing very well all year and in recent matches he has been outstanding," he said. "His performance against Hull KR last Saturday epitomised what he is all about. He took some hefty blows but he kept getting back up and was the best player on the field. "He is developing as a rugby league player and I think he can only continue to get better which is why it is excellent news for the club that he has signed this new deal."
