Steve Davis moved in the quarter-finals of the World Seniors Championship in Portsmouth with a 2-1 victory over Cliff Thorburn on the opening day.
In a rematch of the 1983 World Championship final, Thorburn nicked the opening frame, but Davis hit back by taking the next two with a break of 41 in the final frame proving crucial.
Elsewhere in the afternoon session there were wins for Darren Morgan, Nigel Bond and Dene O'Kane.
Morgan was too strong for Joe Johnson as he won his two frames with room to spare; Bond had to come through two tough frames to beat Dennis Taylor 2-0; while O'Kane got the better of Barry West 2-0 too.
Welshman Tony Chappel kicked off the evening session with a 2-1 victory over Tony Drago - a clearance of 35 in the deciding frame enough to see him into the last eight.
Tony Knowles and Karl Townsend also needed three frames to decide a winner, but it was the former who took the decider 69-16 to book a quarter-final tie with Bond.
Canadian Alain Robidoux later sealed a last eight date with Chappel after whitewashing Les Dodd 2-0.
