Day seven commentary
Tuesday 30 June 2009 16:17, UK
A detailed look back at the seventh day of this year's Wimbledon
2243 : Thank you for joining me for a memorable day at SW19. Murray will take the headlines after the late, late show but plenty of credit must go to Stan for making the match an epic. Come back to the same place tomorrow for our coverage of the women's quarter-finals. 2241 : Murray says it was "great" to play under the roof. He has given plenty of praise to Stan and will now face Juan Carlos Ferrero in the last eight. 2239 : Murray sits in his chair and absorbs the atmosphere after three hours and 57 minutes of superb tennis. 2238 : It is, finally, all over. Murray sends a neat forehand winner down the right hand side of the court to secure victory. What a match! 2238 : 40-15 as Wawrinka is unable to keep the ball in play. Stan challenges but with no luck as Mother Murray roars her support from the stands. Two match points. 2237 : Murray is at 30-15 as the tension rises. 2236 : Murray now serves for the match as Emma and Shane try to keep control of their nerves as they follow his progress. Let me know how you are feeling by getting in touch to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 2235 : A crunching forehand winner gives Murray the break. The crowd go wild and you can hear a large percentage of Britain cheering. Possibly because they want to go to bed. 2234 : Another break point from another poor Stan forehand. Third chance for Murray. 2232 : Murray gives Stan a chance to use his strong backhand as the Scot is unable to get the ball over the net. Get ready for deuce again. 2230 : Stan saves the break point but quickly gives Murray another chance with, guess what, a loose forehand. 2229 : Wawrinka gives Murray a big chance with another forehand error to hand the Brit a break point. 2228 : Stan takes us to 30-30 with a big serve down the middle. 2227 : Murray produces a fantastic lob, I'm giving it shot of the match, to get to 0-30 on Stan's serve. 2226 : The crowd are now very lively as Stan prepares to serve at 4-3 down. 2225 : The players sit down for a break in play as we can see Centre Court lighting up the night sky. Not too many empty seats despite the many transport problems that a late finish can bring. 2224 : It is like a Stan service game as Murray races to 40-0 before the 19th seed wins two points on the spin. Next point goes to the Brit as Wawrinka sends another forehand long. 2223 : Sir Clive Woodwood, the Duke of Kent and Ian Hislop won't leave the Royal Box. I wonder if they are all leaving in the same car? 2222 : No drama from Stan as he takes us to 3-3. Murray to serve again as the drama continues. 2221 : Stan goes to 40-0 before a big Murray forehand down the line gives him a sniff of success. 2219 : I would be interested to know your thoughts and what you are doing at this late stage of the match. Get in touch to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 2218 : You can guess what happened as Wawrinka sent a big winner racing away from Murray to the right hand side of the court. Credit must go to Stan for the spirit he has shown tonight. 2217 : Break point to Stan. No advice for you as it doesn't appear to work. 2216 : Murray is giving us all a scare as a shocking forehand goes long to take us to 30-30. Why can things never be easy for Brits at Wimbledon? 2215 : I think it is time for a late roof fact as the night draws in. It would take 7,500 Wimbledon umbrellas to cover the same area as the roof. Tell it to your friends tomorrow if they like umbrellas. That tip is most helpful if you know Rihanna. 2214 : No wobble from Wawrinka this time as he produces two big serves to get on the board in this set. 2212 : Murray comes from 40-0 down to get us to deuce again. This is how his break in Stan's first service game in this set started. 2210 : If any of you are starting to reach for the Horlicks and a biscuit I urge you to give some thought to how things can pan out at the Australian Open. Lleyton Hewitt's five set victory over Marcos Baghdatis in 2008 didn't finish until 4.33 AM. I don't know how we will all be feeling if this match lasts that long. 2208 : Fireworks above Centre Court now in the dark night's sky. This isn't causing us any problems because of the roof as Murray produces a superb shot on the turn from the baseline to take a 3-0 lead. 2206 : I presume Sir Trevor McDonald is still in the Royal Box and he hasn't had to rush off to present the news. He would have been a genius to predict such a late finish. 2205 : Stan is not the man as he sends a loose forehand into the net. The Swiss' forehand has let him down a few times today. Murray leads 2-0. 2204 : Break point to Murray. The Scot is still hanging in there and this could be a crucial moment in the match. 2203 : Murray battle back from 40-0 down to deuce. This match still has plenty of twists left. 2200 : Welcome to 2200 BST. A time many of us thought we would never reach but we (I) were wrong. Sorry. 2158 : Murray takes his service game with less drama than the last set. No break points for Stan as Heman Hill remains full like the latter stages of a music festival. No call for Blur so far. 2155 : Murray gets things started with a service game. 2154 : Stan holds his nerve as he produces a booming ace to send us to the decider. I don't think any of you living on BST will be heading for bed. 2153 : Set point as Murray's stretching backhand from the back of the court is unable to get over the net. 2152 : Hope again as Stan fails to get another forehand at the back of the court in. Get ready for some big points. 2151 : Big winner from Wawrinka leaves Murray scrambling on the baseline and unable to produce a return. 30-15. 2150 : Stan sends a backhand out on the left hand side of the court. We are at 15-15. 2149 : It is very dark on Henman Hill now but no one is leaving. There is certainly not the call for the sunglasses of earlier in the day. 2148 : It hasn't worked as Stan hangs in there with Murray sending the ball into the net. Wawrinka now serves for the set. Don't plan to go anywhere as we are set for a late finish here on Centre Court. 2147 : Break point to Stan as Murray sends another loose shot crashing into the net. Time to send the Brit your best wishes again. 2146 : One point to Murray and one point to Wawrinka. Welcome back to deuce. 2145 : Come on is the cry from Murray which tells you that Stan has sent the ball wide on the right hand side of the court. 30-30. 2144 : We are now at 15-30 as Murray sends a poor forehand long. These service games are becoming major stories in their own right. 2142 : Murray serves at 5-5 but Stan bags the first point. Time to get nervous. 2141 : It is now dark outside Centre Court as the other match at SW19 is stopped. There would be no chance of play if the roof was open. 2140 : Stan races to a 40-0 lead but Murray moves to within two points with a clean winner. Next point goes to the Swiss through a strong smash. 2138 : We are now set for the latest ever finish at Wimbledon as the previous best of 21.35 in 1981 has now been beaten. I think the roof will get the credit. 2135 : Murray finally takes the game as Stan gets to a drop shot but is unable to keep the ball in play. This match is getting a bit too Hemanesque as Murray gives his fans plenty to worry about. Stan now serves to stay in the match. 2133 : Murray sends a backhand right on the line before Stan sends his return straight into the net. The 19th seed appeals bu there was nothing wrong with that call. Welcome to deuce again. 2132 : Murray hands a break point to Wawrinka. Now is the time to back the Scot. 2131 : Murray's loose forehand makes the score 15-30. We could be set for a long night if this match goes to a fifth set.2130 : Johannes Robert Van Overbeek v Cheng Peng Hsieh is the only other match still going. That contest is in the boys singles and is at 8-8 in the final set. No roof on Court nine. 2128 : Murray misses a chance for a winner and shows his frustration with a verbal tirade. The next shot can't get over the net so we are level at 4-4. This is a battle of nerves at the moment as Wawrinka digs in. 2127 : Murray sends a loose forehand long but produces another winner with his next shot. Deuce again. The pressure is starting to show in the crowd. 2126 : Wawrinka gets his first serve in and a rally develops. Murray has a chance but the net comes to the Swiss' rescue and we are at our old friend deuce again. 2125 : A long rally ends with Stan sending the ball into the net from the back of the court. Break point to Murray. 2124 : Mother Murray shouts encouragement from the crowd as Andy's forehand winner takes us to a deuce. This could be a crucial game if the pressure gets to Wawrinka. 2123 : Murray races to a Wawrinka drop shot at 30-30 but he is unable to turn the ball over the net so Stan has game point. 2122 : Murray sends out a forehand on the left hand side as he gives Stan a 30-0 lead. Murray forces a mistake from Wawrinka on the next point to take us to 30-15. 2120 : Murray makes his way out to face Wawrinka's serve. Will Stan be able to take the pressure after wasting chances to break in the last game. 2118 : A net cord from Murray nearly give Wawrinka another break point but the ball bobbles over and Stan is unable to take advantage. The game goes to Murray as he slams home a forehand winner. 2117 : Wawrinka's forehand lets him down again as he sends his effort out on the full. You cannot waste chances like that at such a crucial stage of proceedings. 2116 : Stan does secure his break point as Murray sends a forehand from the back of the court into the net. 2114 : Good to see a long rally as Murray sends an attempted crosscourt winner out on the right hand side to make the score 0-30 on his serve. Wawrinka gives away the next point as he sends a poor shot straight out on the full. Another poor forehand gets the score to 30-30. What poor play from Stan. 2112 : 15-0, 30-0, 40-0 and Stan wins the game. Not as many long rallies in this set. Good stuff from the Swiss. 2109 : Murray wins his service game to love and Wawrinka wastes a challenge. That game could not have gone any better for him. Although we are still on serve in this set it is definitely the British ace who is the better player at the moment. 2104 : Two loose shots in a row allow Murray to get to 30-30 on the Wawrinka serve. Murray produces a miscue of his own and Stan take the next point and the game. 2102 : Murray hits form as he wins his service game to love. The British number one has produced better serves in this set. The roof is still holding firm. 2059 : Wawrinka won't allow a fourth deuce as he wins two points quickly on the spin. Heman Hill is still packed as people are quite happy to see out the day's action. 2058 : Stan is back on court as a scrumptious crosscourt winner wins the advantage. Murray, however, won't be rolled over as he secures deuce for the third time. 2056 : A superb rally allows Murray to take us to deuce for the second time as he dinks a a volley over at the net. 2055 : Wawrinka starts his service game in similar positive fashion but Murray produces a super winner to make the score 40-30. Stan produces an awful shot next up as we go to deuce. 2052 : Great start to the fourth from Murray as he bags the opening three points of his servie game. He throws in a double fault but no need to panic as a smash at the net secures the 1-0 advantage. 2051 : Murray is back. Time for the fourth set to start with the Brit to serve. 2049 : Murray now uses the chance to have a break as the crowd create a Mexican wave. Have I Got News For You regular Ian Hislop won't join in with the fun but Ewan McGregor will. Good times. 2047 : We now have a slight break in play as Stan heads for the bathroom. His last break didn't go too well. 2046 : And he takes the first of those chances as Wawrinka again sends the ball into the net. 2045 : Jamie Murray is now in the crowd to watch his brother. He could be about to cheer as Andy has three set points. 2043 : Murray won't let Wawrinka back into the contest as he holds his next service game. This set has taken 43 minutes so far as both players prove hard to beat. 2041 : A slight warning before this service game starts as Murray is only getting in 32 per cent of his first serves this set. That percentage needs to improve if he is to stay on the front foot. 2040 : Wawrinka hands the break to Murray as he sends a volley at the net miles out on the left hand side of the court. The Swiss will not be happy with that shot as it has handed Murray a big chance to win this set. 2039 : First saved as Wawrinka produces a neat volley. 2038 : Big chance for Murray now as he has three breaks points on the Wawrinka chance. I can almost hear the majority of Britain cheering him on. 2036 : The men in the straw hats continue to recieve the most attention from the cameras. They may have just arrived from Glastonbury but there is no sign of Bruce 'The Boss' Springsteen. 2035 : Murray holds on as he secures the game via a loose shot from Wawrinka at the back of the court. Both men are wasting chances to break. 2034 : Plenty of entertainment in this game as Murray continues to save break points. Stan appeals one call on the baseline but the shot was correctly ruled out. 2029 : Murray saves a break point as games continue to be evenly contested. 2028 : Roddick is confident after he beat Berdych. He said: "It's definitely the best I've played so far." 2025 : Wawrinka, as expected, holds his serve. This is a tight match at the moment with no sign of the injury which troubled the Swiss in he second set. 2024 : Only one match we will be following now and it is, of course, Murray v Wawrinka. Plenty of entertaining rallies as the third set goes to serve so far. 2022 : Roddick is through in a match that has reached its conclusion quicker than I thought it would. The sixth seed took the glory 7-6 6-4 6-3 and will now face Hewitt in an intriguing battle of two former Wimbledon winners. 2020 : Both players are pushing each other on Centre Court during service games. Wawrinka took Murray to deuce but once again the server holds the power as the Brit takes the game. 2017 : It looks like the other men's singles match currently taking place is about to end as Roddick holds a 5-2 lead against Berdych in the third after winning the first two sets. 2016 : Marray and Delgado are out. They lost in straight sets to Zimonjic and Nestor but no disgrace as they were facing the second seeds and defending champions. 2014 : We continue to go with serve as Stan goes 2-1 up after the score reaches deuce. Murray shouts to himself at the end of the game and, of course, the acoustics mean we can all hear his frustration. 2013 : A quick roof fact for you. The combined weight of the roof is 3,000 tonnes. Interesting. 2012 : We will be under the roof for the duration of this match on Centre Court. Murray isn't worried about that as he races through his opening service game of the third set. 2006 : Murray sends an attempted winner into the net to make the score 15-15 on Wawrinka's serve. Murray just misses a winner down the line at 15-30 which could have provided two break points. The Brit appears to be in the box seat but Wawrinka holds his nerve to seal the game. 2001 : Never in doubt as Murray produces an ace. We are level at one set apiece. Wawrinka's decision to call a trainer now looks like a very poor decision. All the momentum is with Murray. 2000 : Wawrinka sends a return into the net. Murray is back in top gear and he has three set points. 1958 : Wawrinka sends a backhand wide and Murray has the break. There are some youngsters with straw hats on who cannot contain there excitement. 1957 : The crowd are really getting behind Murray now as Wawrinka puts a loose backhand into the net to give the Brit another break point. He needs to take this chance. 1955 : Murray wins two long rallies in a row to bag a break point. Wawrinka control the point but Murray won't be beaten as he forces the Swiss to produce two smashes in order to get to deuce. 1953 : Roddick produces a surprise break on Court One as he takes the second set 6-4 against Berdych. There hasn't been many breaks for the fans there with Karlovic v Robredo providing the warm-up. 1950 : Hope for British fans as Laura Robon kicks off the defence of her girls' single title with a win in straight sets. Maybe the future isn't so bad for British tennis. 1949 : Stan is quickly back to his feet and he will serve with the score at 4-3 on serve in the second set. 1948 : Bad news for Wawrinka fans as he receives treatment for what appears to be a slight muscle strain. Interesting move as he was giving Murray plenty of problems. 1946 : Big serve from Murray secures a 30-0 advantage. Murray has a chance to win the game at the net but is unable to get a sliced volley over the top. No worries, though, as he wins the next point. 1945 : This match continues to provide plenty of entertainment as Wawrinka proves he has no intention of allowing Murray the advantage. The Swiss number two loses two points on her serve but wins the game to make the score 3-3 in the second. 1940 : British duo Marray and Delgado are now two sets down. It will be a long wat for them as they are facing the second seeds. 1939 : Murray produces a fantastic crosscourt forehand winner from the back of the court to beat Wawrinka at the net and secure the game. Great shot. 1938 : A bit of confusion on the second break point as Wawrinka sends a forehand narrowly wide. Late call from the line judge but defininitly the right one. 1937 : Sloppy backhand goes out on the full from Wawrinka to help Murray save the first break point. 1936 : Murray produces his first double fault to give Wawrinka a sniff of a chance at 15-30. The Swiss runs to the net to win the next point and secure two break points. 1934 : No surprise but neither player has produced much serve and volley so far. Murray is producing a better rhythm but there is no sign of Wawrinka rolling over after his positive start. 1932 : Plenty of good rallies on Centre Court as Murray v Wawrinka takes shape. No empty seats for this conest as the fans know they would be missing a treat. Wawrinka levels the score at 2-2. 1927 : We now know who the winner of this match on Centre Court will face in the quarter-finals as Ferrero holds his serve to beat eighth seed Simon in straight sets on Court Three. The Spaniard lost to Murray in the semi-finals at the recent Aegon Championships at Queen's. 1926 : And he produces a powerful ace to take a 2-1 lead in the second set. 1925 : Murray wins the best point of the match so far as he shows plenty of speed to cut off an attempted winner and slide the ball away from Wawrinka. 1924 : Roddick secures the tie-break with a massive ace down the middle. It doesn't look like we will see too many breaks of serve in this contest but it could be fun anyway. 1923 : No need for British fans to get too down as Laura Robson has won the opening set of her first match in the girl's singles. 1922 : Wawrinka is still using great power in most of his shots as he levels up the score with ease. 1921 : No shock as the first set between Roddick and Berdych goes to a tie-break. The American currently has a mini-break and leads 3-2. 1919 : A better start for Murray at the start of the second set as he drops only one point in his opening service game. 1916 : Wawrinka takes the first break point as Murray produces an awful backhand volley at the net. The Swiss took the opener 6-2 to give British fans plenty to worry about this evening. There is still, however, a long way to go on Centre Court as the roof is shut. 1915 : Murray sends a loose forehand out at the back of the court to give Wawrinka three sets points. 1914 : Ferrero has broken Simon on Court Three and he is 3-1 up in the third with a two set advantage already secured. 1913 : Murray looks back at the races as he races to a 40-0 lead. A poor volley hand Wawrinka some hope of bagging the first set in this game but it doesn't last long as the Scot wins the next point. 1911 : Murray is starting to make Wawrinka work harder but the 19th seed still has the upper hand as a neat backhand earns a 5-1 lead. Murray now serves to stay in the set. 1907 : Murray is up and running as he bags his first game of the match. He is still a double break down. 1906 : British duo Delgado and Marray lose the opening set of their men's doubles match on Court 15. Second seeds Zimonjic and Nestor bagged a 7-5 success. 1905 : Warinka doesn't allow Murray a second chance as he moves 4-0 ahead. The Brit wasted one of his challenges at the end of the game. 1904 : Murray fails to take a break point as his backhand hits the net. 1903 : Ferrero moves two sets to love up against Simon as he takes the second 6-3. The Spaniard will face the winner of Murray v Wawrinka if he claims victory. 1858 : Berdych and Roddick is going with serve so far on Court One. 3-3 at the moment. 1856 : Wawrinka breaks again as Murray sends a forehand out on the full. I don't think this is what any British fans expected to happen at the start of this match. The Swiss has shown plenty of power so far to worry Murray. 1854 : Celeb watch on Centre Court can now include news legend Sir Trevor McDonald. He looks happy to be in the Royal Box. 1852 : Wawrinka holds his opening service game against Murray. The Brit forced deuce but he trails 2-0. 1851 : Laura Robson is now in action in the girl's singles on Court 14. She is taking on Canadian Katarena Paliivets. 1849 : Hewitt won 4-6 2-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 and he is now handing out sweatbands to the Fanatics, the Australian fans in the crowd. A great day for 2002 Wimbledon champion. 1847 : Hewitt completes a fantastic victory on Court Two as Stepanek fails to keep a sliced backhand in play. The Australian has won from two sets down for the sixth time in his career and will face Roddick or Berdych in the next round. 1846 : Wawrinka takes his third break point as Murray sends a forehand from the back of the court into the net. Interesting start for the British number one. 1845 : Wawrinka wastes the second himself as he sends an awful shot out on the full at the back of the court. 1844 : Bad start for Murray as Wawrinka earns two break points. The Swiss number two fails to take the first as Murray strikes a backhand volley winner. 1842 : The Aussie fans are in fine voice out on Court Two as Hewitt breaks Berdych again to secure a chance to serve for the match at 5-2 up in the fifth and final set. 1841 : We are under way on Centre Court and Wawrinka wins the first point on the Murray serve. 1837 : Murray and Wawrinka are warming up. The acoustics of the court are great as the umpire makes the call of two minutes. 1836 : Hewitt continues to hold onto his final set break on Court Two as he leads 3-2 against Stapenek. This would be the sixth time in his career that the Australian has won from a two-set deficit. A great record I'm sure you will agree. 1835 : We are under way on Court One as Roddick takes on Berdych. The Czech is serving in the opening game. 1833 : Andy Murray gets a great reception as he arrives on Centre Court. The roof will stay closed for this match but that won't worry the Scot as he has a good indoor record. 1832 : British duo Jon Marray and Jamie Delgado are now in action in the men's doubles as they take on second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic. They are 2-0 down in the first set. 1830 : Ferrero is the winner of the tie-break as he secures a 7-4 success. 1827 : We are in a tie-break on Court Three as Ferrero and Simon battle for supremacy. The winner of that match could face Andy Murray in the next round. 1824 : Hewitt takes the fourth set and has a break at the start of the decider. Berdych appears to have a knee injury and it looks like he will struggle to give the Australia a proper test. 1823 : You all know who is playing next on Centre Court. It's Andy Murray time! 1822 : The words of a happy Safina straight after her victory over Mauresmo are: "I managed to turn back the match and win it and I'm really happy." 1818 : Safina makes sure the second matches on Centre and Court One finish at almost the same time as Mauresmo sends a shot from the back of the court into the net. The top seed won 4-6 6-3 6-4. 1817 : Big Ivo has won! Verdasco sends a loose return out on the full at the back of the court to hand the Croat victory. He will now face Roger Federer in the last eight. A tough task. 1815 : Both players are failing to take chances to win the fourth set on Court One. The score is currently 10-9 to Karlovic. 1814 : Safina breaks Mauresmo to give herself the chance to serve for the match. The top seed won the game as the Frenchwoman sent a loose shot out on the right hand side of the court. 1812 : Karlovic saves another set point, but this time on his serve, with a booming ace. 1811 : Verdasco fails to take his first set point as Big Ivo hits a big winner to the back of the court. 1810 : Safina holds her nerve by stopping a point with a correct challenge and wins the service game. 4-4 in the decider. 1809 : Karlovic is two points away from victory on his own serve but Verdasco produces a fantastic return to level the tie-break at 5-5. 1808 : And she saves the second with a forehand winner to exactly the same spot. 1807 : Safina, making plenty of noise with the roof closed, sends a winner down the line to save the first break point. 1806 : Safina produces a double fault at an awful time to hand Mauresmo two break points. 1805 : Mini-break for Karlovic on Court One. Remember if he wins the tie-break, he wins the match. 1803 : Double break for Hewitt on Court Two. Could he record his sixth career victory from a two-set deficit? Stepanek will hope not 1802 : We have a tie-break on Court One. Verdasco to serve first. 1759 : Safina's powerful double forehand winner levels the final set at 3-3. Still no sign of Andy Murray as this match continues. 1758 : We are getting ever closer to a fourth set tie-break on Court One. Big Ivo has to hold serve to force the inevitable. 1755 : Safina is staying strong at the moment as she breaks back with a forehand winner. Both players continue to be very evenly matched. 1752 : No shocks as Verdasco and Karlovic hold their serves in the fourth set on Court One as the Spaniard leads 5-4. 1751 : Great point at the start of Safina's second service game as Mauresmo beats the Russian at the net with a rasping winner. The Frenchwoman leads 3-0 in the decider. 1749 : Hewitt breaks at the start of the fourth set against Stepanek and Ferrero quickly breaks back to level the scores against Simon. There is plenty of fun on the outside courts. 1748 : A date to put in your diary as Mauresmo turns 30 on Sunday. That is the day after the women's final so will it be a double celebration for the former SW19 champion? 1747 : Mauresmo finally takes her chance to break as she powers a smash away from Safina. The Russian, unsurprisingly, shows her frustration by throwing her racquet to the ground. 1746 : Mauresmo sends a return out on the full at the back of the court but Safina quickly hands her anothe break point with a loose forehand. 1745 : Safina's service game continues as Mauresmo secures a break point. 1742 : Safina struggles in her opening service game of the final set as Mauresmo takes the top seed to deuce for the second time. 1740 : Hewitt keeps his cool to pull to within a set of Stepanek. That should be a decent match to watch on Court Two. 1739 : Early break for Simon on Court Three as the Frenchman leads Ferrero 2-0. 1738 : Serena Williams has declared herself happy with her form after her win over Daniela Hantuchova earlier today - but says she is looking to get even better. "I've definitely been solid and playing consistently,'' she said. "But obviously there's always room for improvement in my game. "I definitely felt like I could have served a little better today. "I feel like I definitely need to step it up, play better, really start playing some great tennis, or go home. And I don't want to go home, so I'm just getting more serious." 1737 : Hewitt is now serving for the third set against Stepanek on Court Two. However, sadly for the Aussies, he is two sets to love down. 1736 : You will remember American Sam Querry from the world of tennis. Well, I can now bring you the news, via Twitter, that he is back home in Santa Monica. The wonders of modern technology. 1734 : Safina takes the second set with a powerful ace, her third of the match, to take us into a decider under the roof. 1732 : Mauresmo is making a meal of what should be a very simple service game as she throws in some unforced errors. She screams in disappointment and the echo can be heard all around Centre Court. 1728 : Big news from Court One! We have a break of serve! Big Ivo has claimed the third set 6-3 to bag the lead against Verdasco. 1727 : Simon and Ferrero are set to start their clash on Court Three. The winner could be Andy Murray's opponent in the next round. 1726 : It should be cooler for the players on Centre Court now as the air conditioning has been switched on. The fans look pleased to be part of history. 1725 : Mauresmo won the first game to be played under the roof but she is still a break down in the second set. 1724 : All went to plan in the timing of the roof getting ready for use. There was only a 40 minute break as we waited for play to resume. 1722 : The final roof fact to keep you entertained is: 290 million tennis balls could fit in Centre Court with the roof closed. I don't know if that face will be useful for you at dinner parties. 1720 : Safina wins the first point under the roof with a neat winner down the line. The sound of the ball bouncing off the racquet is a lot louder inside. Must be something to do with acoustics. 1719 : Ivanovic has explained how she picked up her injury against Venus. She said: "Just when I was serving 30-40 down in that first game, and after my first serve, when I landed I just felt a sharp pain on my inner thigh and I couldn't step on my leg." 1717 : Our friend John Barrett and actor Ewan McGregor, who you will will remember from plenty of films, are both looking excited on Centre Court as we await the start of the first ever match under the roof. 1716 : Covers are off on the outside courts as well but no sign of the players returning to action. 1715 : Worrying news for Venus Williams as she talks of a slight injury after she was handed victory against Ana Ivanovic when the Serb was forced to retire. "I'm doing everything I can for my knee," she said. "And this is Wimbledon, so it doesn't matter how much pain I'm in, I'm going to keep playing." 1714 : Gareth Williams thinks "the Murray match may now go over until tomorrow?" I'm still not sure that will the case as it looks like the weather is clearing at SW19. Get in touch to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1713 : The players make their way back out onto Centre Court as I bring you roof fact number three: The span of the moving roof trusses is 77 metres. 1712 : Roof fact number two: 43 miles per hour - the wind speed up to which the roof can be deployed/retracted. 1711 : Karlovic and Verdasco are now warming up on Court One. No roof there but play should get back under way before Centre Court. 1710 : I will now gives you some roof facts to keep you entertained as we wait for play to start again. 1. It is 16 metres above the court surface. 1709 : Jimmy Deane has a question. If the rain stops and it becomes a nice afternoon again, will play have to stop to open the roof? Not in the Mauresmo v Safina match as once the roof shuts for an individual contest it has to stay shut. However, if the weather improves we could see open air for Murray v Wawrinka. 1704 : Gary Kruger is delighted by the recent events on Centre Court. He writes: "Roofs are a great idea. Now all we need is one on Lords and English sport will be saved!!" I will see if we can get that idea sent to the MCC. Send your views to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1701 : I will use this chance to bring you the views of Andy Roddick from Twitter. He was pleased that the USA went 2-0 up in last night's Confederations Cup final but disappointed when they lost 3-2 at full-time against Brazil. An interesting range of emotions for the man who will play in today's final match on Court One against Tomas Berdych. 1658 : The players are due back out on Centre Court at 1710. That is nice as we won't have to wait too long without tennis. Let me know your thoughts on aything to do with tennis or roofs by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1654 : If you want to know more about the new roof look at the features section on our microsite as Andy Schooler chats to John Barrett, popular TV commentator and vice president at the All England Club, about the new introduction to SW19. 1653 : The Australian Open already uses a roof on their main court but that is generally for very hot weather. I don't think that will happen in London. 1651 : Cliff Richard isn't breaking into song so already we have seen one Wimbledon tradition halted by the roof. I wonder what would have happened if Cliff was here the same day as Justin Timberlake. Could have resulted in an interesting remix of the Timberlake hit 'My Love'. 1649 : The shut roof could favour Mauresmo as she has won her only tournament this year indoors in Paris and she was on the back foot when play was halted. 1648 : The BBC now have their weathergirl on who tells us there are angry clouds all the way towards Gloucestershire. I don't think we need to worry about conditions in Stow-on-the-Wold but it might not be good news at SW19. 1647 : The roof is shut. Welcome to a brave new world. 1645 : Hewitt bags another break in the third against Stepanek before play is halted on Court Two. Remember we have no roof anywhere else at Wimbledon. 1643 : A bit of info about what will now happen now. The roof takes about 10 minutes to close and then we will have another 30 minute wait for the right atmosphere after the air conditioning is switched on. 1641 : The roof is closing! There appears to be a toy parrott in the roof's structure who is about to be part of history. I feel we should have some dramatic music to mark this event on Centre Court but it doesn't look like that will happen. 1638 : There is still action on Court Two and we could be in the early stages of another Hewitt comeback as he leads 3-0 in the third. The Australian lost the opening two sets against Stepanek. 1637 : They stop on Court One as well with the score level at 3-3 in the third set between Karlovic and Verdasco. No movement from the foof on the Centre Court yet. 1634 : Big news on Centre Court as the rain arrives. A cheer goes up as the fans know this could be the first time the new roof is used. Cliff Richard is looking concerned in the crowd and we await to see if he will start singing. I'm going to request a rendition of Summer Holiday. 1633 : Routine win for Djokovic as he beats Sela 6-2 6-4 6-1. Ferrero v Simon is next up on Court Three for the right to possibly face Andy Murray in the quarters. 1632 : Jimmy Deane wants to know who holds the record for the most aces served in one match? The record goes to Ivo Karlovic, currently in action on Court One, in his French Open first round match this year against Lleyton Hewitt. The Croat struck an incredible 55 aces but still somehow managed to lose 6-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 which will provide Australian fans with hope today. Get in touch to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1628 : Safina is now firmly back in business as she secures her second break of serve in a row with a powerful smash. 3-1 to the Russian. 1625 : I bring a small bit of hope for Hewitt fans as their man has come from two sets down to record victory five times in the past. That, I can tell you, is a very good record. 1624 : Safina holds serve after a game packed with some fantastic rallies to make the score 2-1 in this set. There are a few empty seats on Centre Court which is a shame as people are missing a decent match. 1623 : It won't be long before we can report that Djokovic is in the last eight as he leads by two sets and 4-0 in the third against Sela. 1621 : Bad news, as expected, for Hewitt fans as he loses the second set 6-2. No word on if Stepanek has started to break dance. Might be seen as slightly mean as Hewitt is struggling with a thigh strain. 1619 : Safina has regained her focus and she is now level at 1-1. Both players are still evenly matched so no sign of an immediate start to Andy Murray v Stanislas Wawrinka. 1618 : Things get worse for Hewitt as he receives treatment on a thigh strain. The Australia was tipped to be a major worry for Andy Murray later in the tournament but it doesn't look like that will be the case. 1616 : Big cheer as Vedasco takes the tie-break on Court One. This match could take a long time to reach its conclusion as so far there have been no breaks of serve. 1615 : Three sets for Verdasco in the tie-break on Court One. That would level up his match against Big Ivo. 1613 : Safina is, as expected, starting to lose her cool. She is a break down in the second set and doesn't look very happy. 1612 : All going to plan for Djokovic so far as he wins the second set 6-4. Not so for former Wimbledon champ Hewitt as the Australia trails by a double break in the second set of his match. 1610 : My most recent e-mail has told me that Mick Wadsworth is the new manager of Chester City so would be good to read your views on all things tennis by getting in touch with me at nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1608 : The second set of Verdasco v Karlovic has gone to a tie-break. Both men have claimed mini-break but that just means we still on schedule at 1-1. 1605 : A second unseeded woman is through as Lisicki completes a 6-4 6-4 victory over ninth seed Wozniacki. The German will now take on the winner of Safina v Mauresmo. 1604 : Mauresmo serves out to love, finishing it with an ace. After a shaky start that was a highly impressive set from the forrmer champion. The top seed has lost the opener 6-4 and finds herself in trouble. 1602 : Safina does hold and makes Mauresmo serve this out. Djokovic breaks on Court Three and appears to be avoiding the Champions' Graveyard curse out there. He'll serve for a two-set lead against Sela. 1559 : Having led 3-0, Safina now finds herself serving to stay in the first set at 3-5. Quite a turnaround - but one we did predict might happen. Sorry for blowing our own trumpet! 1556 : It is tough day for Hewitt on Court Two as he falls a set and a break behind against Stepanek. The Australian will be hoping to roll back the years and produce a memorable comeback. 1554 : Safina hands the break of serve on a plate to Mauremo as she produces a double fault at 30-40. Not great from the Russian. 1552 : Two break points to Mauresmao on Centre Court. 1547 : Bad news for the many Australia fans on Court Two as Hewitt loses the first set of his clash against Stepanek. The former Wimbeldon champ has looked good during this tournament so far so he won't want to see his run come to an end today. 1546 : Mauresmo has broken back and she trails 3-2 in the opening set. Both players look evenly matched on Centre Court so we might have to wait for Andy Murray. 1545 : Schiavone is now based in London so I think we can make a slight claim to her becoming a British woman succeeding at Wimbledon. I'm not sure everyone will see things that way. 1543 : Francesca Schiavone deserves our congratulations as she becomes the first unseeded woman to reach the last eight. The Italian beat 26th seed Razzano 6-2 7-6 and will now face Dementieva. 1540 : The Israeli fans on Court Three, including a man who looks like Seth Rogen of comedy movies fame, are getting behind Sela but their man is struggling against Djokovic, who leads 2-1 in the second. The Serb bagged the opening set. 1539 : It looks like evry update from Court One will be fairly similar at the moment as we are on serve at 2-2 in the second set between Karlovic and Verdasco. The Croat won the first on a tie-break. 1537 : Safina is starting prove people wrong who doubted her credentials on grass as she moves 3-0 up in the first set. Mauresmo is a former ladies' champion at Wimbledon so this would be a big win for the top seed. 1535 : Stepanek has broken Hewitt again and he leads 5-3 on the first set. The Czech ace has been known to celebrate with a pot of break dancing but that might not be a good idea as it is quite hot today. 1533 : More Twitter news for fans of David Miliband and Tim Henman. Britain's number one woman Anne Keothavong, who lost in the first round at SW19 thinks the two look similar. No word yet from the Foreign Secretary on this news or his brother Ed, who for fans of political facts, is also in the cabinet. 1530 : Lisicki has bagged the first set against Wozniacki and broken her in the first game of the second set. Now would be a good time to worry for fans of the Dane. 1528 : Djokovic takes the opener 6-2. The Serb is out on Court Three today and I'm not quite sure how he feels about that scheduling. 1527 : Big news for fans of Big Ivo as he takes the tie-break 7-5. He could face Federer in the last eight. 1525 : Djokovic is in good form at the start of his clash against Sela. He is 5-2 up in the opener. 1521 : Hewitt quickly breaks back to prove Vik Dowlul slightly wrong. Looks like we could be set for a fun match on Court Two. 1520 : Stepanek breaks Hewitt at the start of their clash on Court Two. Vik Dowlul from Glasgow has e-mailed in and he thinks Hewitt now looks about 50. Seems a bit harsh to me as he can still move at a decent pace and not many men of that age would feel secure wearing a baseball cap back-to-front. Join in by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1519 : No shock as I bring you news that the first set between Karlovic and Verdasco has reached a tie-break. 1517 : Lisicki is now serving for the first set against Wozniacki. Good start from the German. Safina and Mauresmo are already out on Centre Court. Andy Murray will be in action after that match. 1514 : Fed talks to the BBC after the game and says: "Today it is great to go through as I thought Robin served great during the match." He also spoke of his relief that Soderling produced a double fault during the third set tie-break. 1511 : Next up for Federer will be Karlovic or Verdasco. That match is on serve with Karlovic leading 5-4 in the first. 1510 : Fed is through as Soderling sends a loose shot out of play. Both men share a warm handshake as the Swede makes his way off court as the second seed enjoys the cheers of the crowd. 1509 : Double fault from Soderling. Match point to Federer. 1508 : No luck for the Swede as Federer sends a forehand on the stretch racing away from the 13th seed. 1507 : Another min-break for Soderling. Two service points coming up and if he wins them both he has the set. 1506 : Fed quickly breaks back. 4-4. 1505 : First mini-break for Soderling and he looks pretty pleased with that. 1503 : On serve as Fed hits a return out of play. Soderling leads 2-1. 1502 : Soderling does the necessary and holds his serve to force a third set tie-break. 1501 : Lisicki, who beat Kuznetsova in the last round, is a break up against Wozniacki on Court Four. Early days in that clash so no need for fans of the Dane to get too worried. 1500 : Strong service game from Federer to force Soderling to serve for the right to contest a third set tie-break. 1459 : No Ivo Karlovic on Twitter. Bad news for fans of the big serving Croat. 1458 : I don't want to shock any of you but the match between Karlovic and Verdasco on Court One is still on serve. Get in touch at nick.hext@bskyb.com to let me know your thoughts on any of today's action so far. 1456 : Unseeded Schiavone has won the first set on Court 18. The Italian could become the first non-seed through to the last eight. 1454 : Federer wins the next two points to secure a 5-4 lead in the third. We are still on serve as it gets nervous for Soderling on Centre Court. 1453 : No shock as Soderling produces an error to bring us to deuce again. 1452 : Another break point as Soderling sends Fed charging round the court before producing a neat drop shot winner. 1451 : Soderling sends his return into the net and we are at deuce. 1450 : Fed levels at 30-30 but Soderling earns himself a break point with a booming forehand return on the next point. 1449 : Soderling sends a superb backhand winner down the line to get to 0-30 on the Federer serve. 1448 : Azarenka will have some positive vibes ahead of her quarter-final against Serena as she beat the American in the final at Miami earlier in the season. 1446 : We continue to be on serve on Centre Court as Federer leads Soderling 4-3 in the third. 1444 : Serena joins her sister in the last eight as Hantuchova sends a forehand out of play. The second seed won 6-3 6-1. Next up on Court Two is the pride of Australia, Lleyton Hewitt. 1442 : Azarenka sees a strong forehand sent back into the net by Petrova to wrap up a three-set success. The eighth seed looks set to face Serena Williams in the last eight. Could be a tough task. 1440 : Another update on British tennis aces on Twitter as Laura Robson reveals she met Justin Timberlake a couple of days ago. No word on if Alex Bogdanovic has met any of the other members of N'Sync during this year's fun and games at SW19. 1438 : Serve is still holding firm in Soderling v Federer as the Swede wins his game to love with a big ace down the middle to level at 2-2 in the second. 1437 : Double break for Serena on Court Two. She leads 4-0 in the second and is very comfortable. 1435 : Soderling doesn't allow Federer a second chance in that game and the score is now level at 1-1 in the third. 1433 : Fed fails to take a break point on Soderling's serve as he sends an attempted crosscourt winner narrowly out on the left hand side. 1432 : Big Ivo is now warming up for the second match on Court One. He has a baseball cap on which is a wise move given today's weather. 1430 : The Williams express continues as Serena leads 3-0 in the second against Hantuchova. Richard will have plenty of time this afternoon to take some pictures. 1428 : Still no sign of big serving Croat Ivo Karlovic on Court One as we await the start of his clash against Fernando Verdasco. Maybe the duo have beem caught by surprise after Ivanovic's injury. 1427 : Haas is through after winning 95 per cent of his points on his first serve. He won 7-6 6-4 6-4 against Andreev and didn't face a single break point during the contest. 1425 : Soderling fails on his next service point as he sends an awful effort out on the full at the back of the court. A repeat of the tie-break between the pair in the French Open final which Federer also won. 1424 : Soderling breaks back as Fed sends a loose shot out of play on the right hand side of the court. 1423 : Soderling will make Federer win both his service points as he hits a strong winner down the left hand side of the court. 5-4 to the Swiss. 1422 : First mini break for Federer as Soderling sends a loose backhand out of play at the back of the court. 1421 : Still no mini breaks in the tie-break as Soderling's backhand volley gives him a 3-2 lead. 1419 : Federer hits a superb backhand winner to take a 2-1 lead in the tie-break. Great work from the second seed. 1418 : Serena, with dad Richard on hand with his camera, takes the opener against Hantuchova 6-3. Good day for the Williams sisters so far. 1417 : Federer wins his service game to love to force the tie-break. A couple of big aces from the Swiss. 1415 : Haas has a break in the third against Andreev. The German has won eight matches in a row on grass after his success at Halle and could face the man he beat in the final of that tournament, Novak Djokovic, in the next round. 1414 : Soderling will make Federer serve for the right to contest a second set tie break as he sends a neat backhand volley winner at the net to the left hand side of the court. 1413 : Hantuchova is struggling against Serena at the moment, 5-2 down in the opener, but she has impressed after securing a battling win against brave Brit Laura Robson in the first round by not losing a set in her next two matches. 1412 : 5-5 in Federer v Soderling as we look set for a second set tie-break. Both men are serving well. 1411 : Sir Clive Woodwood and Ian Hislop provide the first names of today's Centre Court celeb watch. One was a losing coach of the British and Irish Lions and one edits Private Eye. I will let you put them in the right order. 1409 : It is very hot in London today as the amount of sunglasses and sun cream is proving on Centre Court. Without this is a day to play safe with the weather. 1407 : Petrova levels the scores against Azarenka with a 6-2 victory in the second set. She received some treatment earlier in the match but now appears to be back in her stride. 1406 : And Fed does the business with a booming ace to level the scores. Strong serving from the Swiss so far. 1405 : Federer has Soderling running all over the court as he bids to level the scores in the second set at 4-4. 1404 : It is tough to see a winner in the women's singles from outside the Williams family at the moment. Who do you think can challenge them for the title. Dementieva? Mauresmo? Get in touch to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1403 : Razzano v Schiavone is now under way in the second match of the day on Court 18. 1402 : Serena appears to be follow her sister's lead as she takes a 3-1 lead in the opening set on Court Two. 1358 : The two women leave Court One together as we await the start of Fernando Verdasco v Ivo Kalovic. You will all know big Ivo as a big server. 1357 : Ivanovic breaks down in tears as she is forced to pull out through injury. Venus shows concern for her opponent as I'm sure this is not the way she wanted to reach the last eight. 1356 : On serve in the second set of Federer v Soderling as Ivanovic returns to the court.. 1354 : Venus jumps on the spot as she keeps warm while Ivanovic has plenty of strapping put on the top of her left leg. 1353 : Serena v Hantuchova is under way in a repeat of a quarter-final clash from two years ago. You will remember that match for Hantuchova failing to take advantage of an injury to Serena and somehow stumbling to defeat. 1352 : Break in play on Court One as Ivanovic receives treatment to her left leg. 1351 : Agnieszka Radwanska is the second woman into the last eight. She beats 17-year-old American qualifier Melanie Oudin 6-4 7-5. 1350 : Second set joy for Haas as he races into a two-set lead over Andreev. All going well for the German, who gave Federer a real test at the French Open. 1349 : Petrova has a break in the second set against Azarenka. She lost the opener on a tie-break. 1345 : Update from the crazy world of Twitter as Andy Murray reveals he enjoyed a game of table football last night. I have no idea if this means he is in good shape for his clash against Stanislas Wawrinka but such is the way of the modern world. 1342 : Easy service game for Fed as he secures the opening set. 6-4 for the Swiss as he bids to extend his 10-0 career record against Soderling. 1341 : Venus, as expected bags the opener, in 30 minutes. Ivanovic needs to produce something pretty special to live with the third seed. 1340 : Federer takes his third break point as Soderling sends a loose return into the net. The SWI9 legend will now serve for the set. 1338 : Soderling saves another as Federer sends an attempted winner down the line into the net. This is a shaky service game from the Swede. 1337 : Soderling saves the first break point against Federer as he sends a backhand winner racing away from the Swiss ace. 1335 : Serena Williams is out on Court Three as she gets set to take on Daniela Hantuchova. The American has a career record of 6-1 against her Slovakian opponent. 1334 : It is all about Venus Williams on Court One as she looks to break Ivanovic's serve for the third time and take the opening set. 1332 : Woe for young Brit Heather Watson on Court 19. She reached the final of the girls' singles at this year's French Open but no such luck in London as she is defeated in three sets by Russian Valeria Solovieva. Laura Robson plays later. 1331 : Still on serve in Federer v Soderling. 4-3 to the Swede as both men make a positve start on their serve. 1330 : Venus can't be stopped as she races into a 4-0 lead. Ivanovic is looking frustrated on Court One. 1328 : Dementieva is the first person through to the last eight as she wraps up a 6-1 6-3 victory over Vesnina. The fourth seed will face either Schiavone or Razzano in the next round. 1327 : Question from Jimmy Deane: "I don't think anyone will manage it this year as the competition is too close but has anyone ever won an open championship without losing a set? If so, who and when?" Well, the answer is yes. Rafael Nadal was the last - he won last year's French Open without losing a set. Federer won the Australian Open in 2007 in the same way. The last person to achieve the feat at Wimbledon was Bjorn Borg in 1976. 1326 : Dementieva is one game away from a quarter-final spot as she leads 5-3 in the second set. 1325 : Venus bags her next service game with a little more ease to move into a 3-0 lead. All going to plan for the American so far. 1323 : The Federer family look happy in the stands today. Do you think their man will grab the glory at SW19 this year. I, rather uncontroversially, think he is the man to beat but I'm sure there are plenty of you out there who feel a certain Scot has a chance. Let me know what you think by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1322 : Venus bounces back from her shaky opening service game to break Ivanovic. You get the feeling this might not be a great day for the Serb if Venus finds her top gear. 1320 : We are on serve so far on Centre Court. It is 2-2 in a repeat of this year's French Open final which Federer won 6-1 7-6 6-4. 1319 : Azarenka v Petrova is in an opening set tie-break and the Belarusian has taken the glory 7-5. 1318 : Dementieva is having things all her own way so far. She has a break in the second set and leads 4-2. She won the opener 6-1. 1317 : Venus hits a winner down the right hand side of the court to bag the opening game. Entertaining start down on Court One. 1316 : And again Venus levels up at deuce as Ivanovic sends a return into the net. 1315 : Superb drop shot from Ivanovic to earn her second break point of the opening game. 1314 : It is a nice day on Court One as well with Venus Williams taking on Ana Ivanpvic in a battle of two of the big names in the women's draw. The Serb has already let one break point slip. 1312 : We are under way on Centre Court. Roger Federer continues his bid to win a sixth title at SW10 but he loses the opening game to Robin Sodering. 1310 : Haas takes the first set against Andreev on Court Four. The German bags the tie-break 10-8. 1309 : Nick Hext is in the commentary chair now. Get your e-mails sent to nick.hext@bskyb.com. 1304 : Petrova savs set point against Azarenka and breaks to level at 5-5. Nip and tuck in that one so far. 1302 : Haas comes to the net for a drop volley which gives him two set points in the breaker. The first is missed with a forehand error and then it's a double fault! That's only the fourth point he's dropped on serve. What a time to throw that in. 6-6 now. 1300 : Federer comes out on to Centre for his match with Soderling. Remember Fed leads Sod 10-0 in their head-to-head record but Soderling plays well on fast surfaces - all hisbest results have come in slick indoor conditions. Over on One, Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic are ready to warm up. 1258 : Radwanska has turned things around against Oudin. She was 3-1 down but has just claimed the first set 6-4. The youngster will do well to come back from here given her lack of experience. Having said that, she did recover from a set down in the last round against Jankovic. 1255 : Azarenka is about to serve for the set against Petrova at 5-4. As expected, Haas and Andreev move into a tie-break. 1251 : A solid start to the second set from Vesnina on Court Two - she holds to love which was just what the doctor ordered after that disappointing first set. 1249 : Haas now leads 6-5 against Andreev - no breaks of serve yet though. 1246 : Dementieva shows her class with a volley at the net as she takes the set 6-1 with a hold to 15. She also has some of the best groundstrokes in the game and were it not for that flaky serve she would surely have won a Grand Slam. She has been in two finals before - at the French and US Opens in 2004. 1244 : Vesnina gets on the board at 5-1 but Dementieva will now serve for the first set. 1243 : At least Vesnina is showing some fight. She saves another set point on Court Two. 1242 : No sooner is Petrova back level than she concedes the advantage again - Azarenka to serve at 4-3. Meanwhile, Radwanska has hit back against Oudin and they are now all square at 3-3 in the opening set. 1240 : Dementieva moves to set point at 0-5 but then dumps a forehand low into the net. Petrova breaks back to level at 3-3 against Azarenka. 1236 : Andreev staves off break point against Haas as their first set moves onto 3-3. Dementieva holds again to 30 to open a 5-0 lead. 1233 : It's looking easy for Dementieva as she goes 4-0 up. The fourth seed would be delighted to wrap up a rapid win today, given the weather. The less energy expended in the heat, the better, especially given the winners in the ladies' matches today will be back in action tomorrow. 1229 : 3-0 now to Dementieva, despite another double in that game. Plain sailing so far. She's already icing her neck at the change of ends - it's very hot with temperatures set to hit 29/30 degreess Celsius today. Dementieva is a player who's struggled in the heat before. So is Novak Djokovic who plays later. It could be a factor today - it certainly was for Jelena Jankovic on Saturday when she bowed out after calling the doctor onto court. 1227 : Melanie Oudin has been one of the stories of the championships so far. The 17-year-old American came through qualifying and is now in the last 16. And now she's an early break up against the 11th seed Radwanska. Can she really reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals today? 1225 : A beefy return of Vesnina's second serve gives Dementieva an immediate break of serve. 2-0. Meanwhile, Azarenka has drawn first blood against Petrova and leads 2-1 with a break. 1219 : Many of you will know about Elena Dementieva's serving problems. Her delivery has improved over the years, but she's just come up with two double faults in the opening game of the match. She holds to 30 though. Will it be one of those days for the fourth seed? 1215 : Any other comments or questions? Send your emails to andy.schooler@bskyb.com 1212 : The serious action is now under way. First up on Court Two is fourth seed Elena Dementieva against fellow Russian Elena Vesnina. Victoria Azarenka plays Nadia Petrova on Three. On Four it's Tommy Haas v Igor Andreev and up on 18 it's Agnieszka Radwanska, the 11th seed, against Melanie Oudin, the 17-year-old qualifier, who stunned Jelena Jankovic on Saturday. 1205 : As the players warm-up, it's worth noting there are some other Brits in action today. In the men's doubles third round, Jamie Delgado and Jonny Marray play later. And in the girls' singles, the host nation has two real title hopes in defending champion Laura Robson and Heather Watson, a finalist at this month's French Open. Both start their campaign today. 1200 : The players are stepping out around the grounds now. Wonderful blue skies greet them. Who'd have thought the new roof would have remained redundant thus far? 1158 : Peter Black emails to predict a surprise today. "As an ex-Brit now living in Israel, if you're looking for a surprises...or maybe shock is a better word...then keep your eye on Dudi Sela to win against Djokovic. I've seen the lad play and he's looking good." Good call. Sela has had some great results not just here, but all season, while Novak has been in and out. That's on Court Three - the Graveyard of Champions. Will the 2008 Australian Open champ become its latest victim? 1155 : If you have any thoughts on today's action or indeed anything tennis-related, you can email me - andy.schooler@bskyb.com - and I will publish the best comments. 1150 : With all the last-16 matches scheduled for today, Court Two is hardly a shabby line-up with Elena Dementieva, Serena Williams and Lleyton Hewitt all in action down there. And even those with ground passes have plenty to watch on the outside courts - Novak Djokovic, the former Australian Open champion, is out on Court Three, with rising star Caroline Wozniacki in a battle of the teenagers on Court Four. She's up against Sabine Lisicki, who stunned fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova on Saturday. 1145 : The showcourts have a cracking line-up today. First on Centre it's a re-run of the recet French Open final between Roger Federer and Robin Soderling. Soderling, as he showed at Roland Garros, is a fine player and his game is well suited to grass. However, he's lost 10 times out of 10 to Federer so he's up against it. They are followed onto court by top seed Dinara Safina and former champion Amelie Mauresmo. Having tipped Mauresmo to reach the semis at a big price, I remain confident her grasscourt game could prove too good for Safina, who is playing in the last 16 for the first time here. Then it's Murray v Wawrinka. The Swiss, who won gold wit Federer in doubles at last year's Olympics, has ben playing well and has beaten Murray in three of their seven meetings. However, Murray has sparkled in his last two matches and it's hard to see anything other than a British win really. On Court One, things are also mouthwatering. First it's defending champion Venus Williams against Ana Ivanovic. Venus has been very good so far and I can't see the former world number one troubling her too much. Then it's Fernando Verdasco v Ivo Karlovic, the big-serving Croat, while Andy Roddick against Tomas Berdych finishes things off. Berdych has only lost serve once in three matches and I feel he could spring a surprise today. 1140 : It's another fine day in SW19 with temperatures forecast to hit 29 degrees Celsius - and what a day's action we've got. Of course, Andy Murray is up later against Stanislas Wawrinka - he's in his usual slot of third on Centre Court - but there are some cracking matches all around the ground today - I always think fourth-round day is the best of the tournament with the wheat now seperated from the chaff. We'll run down what's what in a moment.
