Schiavone blows early lead to lose in first round
French Open champion Francesca Schiavone made a swift Wimbledon exit on day one of the 2010 tournament.
The Italian, who turns 30 on Wednesday, was a shock winner at Roland Garros earlier this month but her grasscourt pedigree was questionable.
It was perhaps no great surprise to see her blow a one-set lead as she lost 6-7 (0/7) 7-5 6-1 to former junior champion Vera Dushevina.
The Italian, seeded fifth after her heroics in Paris, lost the first set but after losing a tight second collapsed in the decider out on Court Two at the All England Club.
A total of 38 unforced errors was a far cry from her solid claycourt tennis - Dushevina made just 20 - while the Italian was also left to regret converting on only three of her 14 break points.
"It was a tough match,'' she said. "It was a different surface, different feeling.
"But she played very well and I didn't take my chance maybe in the second set. It's much more easy (for your opponent) when you don't serve so well and when you don't take your chance, particularly on the grass.''
The Russian progresses to a last-64 meeting with Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova.
Dushevina said: "Francesca is champion of Roland Garros, but it's a really different surface, clay and grass. I was the junior champion of Wimbledon and I know how to play on the grass.''
