The WWE UK Championship is being defended away from a WWE ring.

Jack Gallagher will take on champion Pete Dunne at Progress NYC next month, in what will be the second time in six weeks the belt has been fought on the independent scene.

Dunne beat Trent Seven, Wolfgang and BT Gunn in a Fatal 4-way at an ICW event in Glasgow last Saturday and this match is further evidence of WWE's increased push to work with independent promotions.

The clash takes place in New York on August 12, a week before the double-header weekend of NXT Takeover: Brooklyn and SummerSlam.

Dunne has made a big impression in WWE since finishing runner-up in January's inaugural WWE UK Championship Tournament.

He has gone on to win the belt in a match-of-the-year candidate against Tyler Bate at NXT Takeover: Chicago in May, with many fans calling for him to be added to the main roster.

But Dunne told Sky Sports last week he is determined to push independent wrestling as much as possible with next month's showcase proof he intends to stick to his word.

Gallagher was also a mainstay on the UK scene before signing up for WWE's Cruiserweight Classic last year.

Since then he's starred on RAW and 205 Live but has always honest about his desire to hold the UK title.
