WWE Survivor Series 2014: Sting and Dolph Ziggler banished Authority
WCW legend made his first appearance in WWE
Tuesday 24 November 2015 12:51, UK
A new WWE World Heavyweight Champion will be crowned at the 2015 edition of Survivor Series, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
But at the event 12 months ago, it was all about survival as Team Cena battled to avoid being handed their P45s and Team Authority fought to keep Triple H and Stephanie McMahon as WWE's top dogs.
Read on to see how the McMahon-Helmsley family were left distraught - and how Survivor Series 2014 proved successful for Nikki Bella…
Sting and Ziggler scupper The Authority
There have been plenty of traditional Survivor Series elimination matches over the years but possibly none as important as the Team Cena-Team Authority dustup, in which the future of the WWE was at stake. Victory for Cena's mob would have seen The Authority removed from power but a loss would have led to The Chain Gang Soldier's team-mates - Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan, Big Show and Ryback - being fired. However, thanks to a sparkling performance from Ziggler and a face-painted legend, Team Cena's jobs were safe and The Authority were banished.
Both squads lost two members each in the early part of the contest, with Rowan and Ryback sent packing for Team Cena and Team Authority's Mark Henry and Rusev defeated by pinfall and count-out respectively, but Triple H's gang seemed set to triumph when Big Show knocked out Cena, aligned himself with The Authority and walked to the back. Ziggler was subsequently at a three-on-one disadvantage against Kane, Luke Harper and Seth Rollins but somehow managed to pin Kane and Harper and then… STING! The WCW stalwart, making his maiden appearance in WWE, interrupted Triple H's attack on Ziggler, dropped The Game with a Scorpion Death Drop, and placed Ziggler over Rollins for the decisive pinfall. What. A. Debut.
Nikki Bella begins record-breaking reign
Nikki Bella became the longest-reigning Divas Champion of all time when surpassing AJ Lee's 295-day stint with the belt in September - and it all started with a kiss. Bella met Lee at Survivor Series in 2014 and sealed victory after just 35 seconds when her twin sister, Brie, planted a smooch on the Black Widow's lips, allowing Nikki to administer a quick-fire Rack Attack and claim her second Divas Title. With her initial reign, in 2012, lasting just six days, Bella was eager to hold the strap for longer this time around - and she sure did! Lee, Paige, Naomi and Tamina all tried and failed to prise Nikki's garland, but after wearing the championship for 301 days, Bella finally lost it at Night of Champions, tapping out to Charlotte.
Team Fox victorious in Divas tussle
Oh how different the Divas division was 12 months ago. Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks were still plugging away in NXT; Lee had not yet quit the WWE - and Naomi and Natalya were on the same side. The former Orlando Magic cheerleader (Naomi) and Hart Dungeon graduate (Natalya) are rivals nowadays but functioned superbly as a unit at the previous instalment of Survivor Series, banding with Alicia Fox and Emma to down Team Paige, a foursome that comprised Paige, Cameron, the now-retired Layla and Summer Rae. So dominant were Team Fox that they prevailed with a clean sweep, Paige the last of her gang to fall when struck by Naomi's Rear View and head-scissors DDT.
Miz and his mimic claim tag-team gold
This time last year there were TWO Mike "The Miz" Mizanin's knocking around - sort of. Not only did we have The Awesome One himself but also Damien Mizdow, the Clevelander's stunt double. Miz spent much of the time getting Mizdow to carry out unfulfilling duties like collecting his coffee but was saluting his impersonator in Missouri after he pinned Goldust to earn the pair the WWE Tag Team Titles. Miz and Mizdow went into the Fatal Four-Way against Gold and Stardust, The Usos and Los Matadores as underdogs with their experience of teaming together not as extensive as the other duos but that did not matter a jot as Mizdow tagged in and covered and the Bizarre One after an Uso had hit him with a Splash.
Crazy meets crazy - and Wyatt wins
Dean Ambrose and Bray Wyatt are arguably the most unhinged Superstars on the WWE roster - between them they have either hid in enormous Christmas-present boxes, assaulted a mannequin, constructed and defiled a shrine to Roman Reigns, or carried The Undertaker into the abyss. Anyway, they squared off at the Fall Classic in 2014 following Wyatt stopping Ambrose conquering Rollins at Hell in a Cell a month previously. The bout was hard-fought but ended prematurely when Ambrose clobbered Wyatt in the stomach with a chair, causing a disqualification in the Eater of World's favour. Wyatt was not able to celebrate, though, as he was cracked with Dirty Deeds onto said chair and then buried under a load more. They don't call Ambrose The Lunatic Fringe for nothing!
