So, as we head into a new year, we have looked at the matches we'd love to see take place in 2017, including an all-English battle and a bout between two of WWE's best female talents.

AJ Styles v Seth Rollins

The Phenomenal One and The Aerialist have yet to compete against each other in a singles match on WWE television. In fact, the only time they have been in the same bout in the company, bar house shows and dark matches, was during November's Team Raw versus Team Smackdown encounter at Survivor Series, Rollins pinning Styles on that occasion.

WWE fans may have to wait a while for a singles skirmish with Rollins wrestling for the red brand and Styles the blue, but two of WWE's most athletic stars must surely meet at some stage. Just imagine if it was a Ladder Match!

Kevin Owens v Bray Wyatt

WWE - Kevin Owens v Bray Wyatt

Brock Lesnar is often touted as a potential opponent for reigning Universal Champion Owens but there is a man on the full-time roster who could give The Prizefighter a real battle, Bray Wyatt.

Like Styles versus Rollins, the stumbling block could be that Owens (Raw) and Wyatt (Smackdown) are on different shows but that could change if there is a WWE Draft in 2017.

Owens and Wyatt are powerful wrestlers but deceptively agile, with both fans of the running senton. Their verbal interactions would be gold, too - Owens' scathing put-downs versus Wyatt's cryptic lyrics.

Neville v Jack Gallagher

Get to know the English cruiserweight taking WWE by storm, Jack Gallagher

Neville is yet to encounter 'Gentleman' Jack Gallagher since returning to boss the cruiserweight division but supporters of British wrestling will be hoping that changes so that they see the Newcastle native combat the moustached man from Manchester.

It would be a clash of Styles, with Neville primarily - but not exclusively - a high-flyer and Gallagher famed for his mat wrestling and submission skills. Being greedy, we could even chuck another Brit into the mix and make it a triple threat, with Scotland-raised Noam Dar also part of WWE's burgeoning crop of cruiserweights.

Charlotte v Asuka

WWE NXT - Asuka
Image: Asuka is the reigning NXT Women's Champion

Bayley appears to be the latest nemesis for Charlotte, who ended her epic rivalry with Sasha Banks by regaining the Raw Women's Title from The Boss at Roadblock, but reigning NXT Women's Champion Asuka would be a stellar test down the line.

Since dethroning Bayley in Dallas in April, the Japanese has beaten each of her challengers - Bayley in a rematch as well as powerhouse Nia Jax and former WWE Women's Champion Mickie James. The Osaka-born star is renowned for her venomous kicks, so Charlotte should be mindful of that if this bout ever came to pass.

The Shield v… anyone!

WWE - The Shield
Image: Will Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose reunite in 2017?

There are some highly-talented trios in WWE - The New Day; The Wyatt Family, which now includes Randy Orton; and The Club spring to mind - but seeing Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose reunite to take on anybody would be a treat. Rollins and Reigns are currently punishing Owens and Chris Jericho on Raw, while there was a full, if brief, Shield reunion at Survivor Series when the three powerbombed Styles through an announce desk, a move that became their trademark while they ruled the WWE roost between late 2012 and 2014 until, you know, Rollins went rogue!
