WWE Superstar Shake-up: Who won the annual roster reshuffle?
Thursday 19 April 2018 08:16, UK
Five hours of live television, 31 roster transfers, six NXT call-ups and a free agency signing later, and WWE's annual Superstar Shake-up is complete.
It began with Jinder Mahal swapping blue for red and turning up on Monday Night Raw, where he very swiftly lost his United States title to Jeff Hardy.
And it ended with Big Cass standing tall over Daniel Bryan in a SmackDown ring, eight months after he damaged his knee and with Raw firmly in his rear-view mirror.
The five hours between those two bookends provided plenty of the usual twists, turns and surprises, ranging from moves for main-event stars to competitors just starting out in WWE.
We break down the details of the Shake-up and assess which brand came out on top of the post-WrestleMania tweaking...
Singles division
Raw: Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Jinder Mahal, Bobby Roode, Zack Ryder, Mojo Rawley, Chad Gable, Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Mike Kanellis, No Way Jose
SmackDown: Jeff Hardy, Big Cass, Samoa Joe, R-Truth, The Miz, Andrade "Cien" Almas (with Zelina Vega)
The big additions for Raw, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, provide some bulk for their main event scene and their superb ability both as talkers and as in-ring talents make them key acquisitions for the red brand.
They inherited a huge amount of singles competitors, although it seems Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre will be used as a tag team, and that will provide them with some interesting match combinations in the weeks ahead.
SmackDown, by contrast, has taken just a handful of workers but some of them are critical signings.
The Miz will fill the 'provocative heel' void left by the Yep boys, Samoa Joe and Jeff Hardy are hugely popular elite competitors and in Andrade "Cien" Almas they may just have recruited the dark horse of the entire reshuffle.
His abilities are well known to NXT fans and, alongside his superb manager Zelina Vega - whose ringside psychology is second to none - he will be a fascinating presence on SmackDown.
Winner: Tie. Raw has the numbers but SmackDown made some superb individual additions.
Women's division
Raw: Natalya, Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan, Sarah Logan
SmackDown: Asuka, Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville
There was a straight swap situation in terms of the factions, with the predicted reunion of the Absolution pair with new SmackDown general manager Paige coming to fruition, and the Riott Squad heading in the opposite direction.
Natalya is a legitimate ring general and will be able to have good matches with anyone on the Raw roster but Asuka is positioned as a star performer and despite losing her winning streak at WrestleMania, is probably third only behind Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in the women's pecking order.
The fact that two of that top three, and the enormously entertaining and potential-packed Iconic Duo, are now on the blue brand, gives them a clear Shake-up victory as far as the ladies' division is concerned.
Winner: SmackDown
Tag division
Raw: Breezango, The Ascension
SmackDown: The Bar, Gallows & Anderson, SAnitY
Following the Shake-up, it looks like the company's four top-tier tag teams - The Bar, The New Day, The Usos and The Bludgeon Brothers - are all on SmackDown, while Raw has more of the 'works in progress' such as Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt and Drew McIntyre & Dolph Ziggler on board.
Raw also has Breezango, and their extra hour of program time should provide a chance for the superb Fashion Files to be resurrected, while it may also afford some ring time for Konnor and Viktor, who have found television appearances hard to come by since being called up.
But, again, it is hard to see this as anything other than a win for the blues. The Tuesday night tag division is stacked to a point where it could even become the focal point of the show.
Winner: SmackDown
Overall verdict
Shane McMahon will be giving Paige a bonus in her first pay packet as SmackDown general manager because the blue brand aced this Superstar Shake-up.
Raw managed to retain a huge amount of talent and there are no concerns that the standard of their show will slip as a result of the annual roster reshuffle.
But there are now dozens of reasons to be excited about SmackDown, whether it's the post-NXT antics of SAnitY and the Iconic Duo or the prospect of a match between AJ Styles and Samoa Joe, and they are the clear winners of the Superstar Shake-up.
Winner: SmackDown
