In depth

Verdict

In the finale, Edge Closer is selected ahead of Baltimore Jack and Lord Theo. A six-pounds rise in the ratings for his course and distance success last time may understate the ability of Edge Closer as he idled when hitting the front on that occasion. The bigger field today might help his jockey in a bid to produce him late and he gets our vote in this contest. Lord Theo continues to run consistently and is respected, while Golden Desert would have finished a lot closer at Kempton last time with a clear run so a two-pounds drop in the ratings can only help the cause. The drop in trip might yet bring improvement for Count Ceprano, and Sparkling Eyes and Fabuleux Millie are reasonably-enough weighted, we feel, to be given some sort of thought today. Baltimore Jack has a good win-to-run ratio and a four-pounds rise for his Ayr win should not stop him from running well. Finally, Special Day is entitled to be improving after just three promising efforts but, for the selection, we will stick with Edge Closer.
