Verdict

A tricky race to call for those that didn't make the cut in the Carlisle Bell and the solid form of Hula Ballew gets him the nod, while Giant Love, Shadowtime and Stoic Leader all have claims. Michael Dods has his runners buzzing at present and Hula Ballew, twice a winner over c&d including one on soft ground, is a very consistent miler on the northern circuit. He won over the trip two starts ago at Thirsk and was not far away on ground much quicker than this last time. He is only 1lb higher than his highest winning mark and from a decent pitch he can achieve a career best. Stoic Leader was successful over c&d on fast ground in May and has been comfortably beaten from a 1lb higher mark than today's on two subsequent runs, but he does handle some cut. Giant Love may be open to some more improvement after just seven outings at a variety of trips, and he ran well over a mile at Haydock last time, though he has to prove he handles these conditions. Shadowtime was a fast ground Beverley scorer last time. He is up 4lb and this looks tougher, but there is surely more to come and he looks a danger. Wind Shuffle could do with some help from the assessor and the same can be said of Ours, and we'll take Hula Ballew to score.
