In depth

Verdict

Wages can pay to follow here ahead of Glengarra, Before The Mast and Coach Lane. Welsh trainer Alison Thorpe has been extremely profitable to follow this term, and should collect again today with Wages who bids to end a sequence of seconds. Successful in a selling hurdle at Market Rasen on his first start for the yard, he has since been over fences as well, his last outing at Worcester resulting in a five-length defeat by Lascar De Ferbet when sent off as as favourite. Although the six-year-old is creeping up the weights, he can now benefit from the assistance of Richard Johnson who rides plenty of winners for the stable, and should make a bold bid. Glengarra has to give 10lb to the selection but should go well, while Before The Mast has been knocking at the door but in truth has been exasperating to follow. Coach Lane is a past course-and-distance winner and can go well fresh, but most of Venetia Williams' inmates have needed the run, so Wages appears to be the percentage call.
