Verdict

A typically open Showcase sprint with many holding chances but Kathology looks the safest bet and is just preferred over Halmahera, Artie and Talbot Avenue. David Elsworth's Kathology comes to the Roodee in excellent heart following a comfortable success at Epsom late last month. The son of College Chapel showed plenty of dash to lead at halfway and kept on strongly when challenged in the closing stages to give the impression that he won with a little in hand. The selection is a previous course and distance winner, has a reasonable draw in stall 7 and should give another good account off his revised rating. Last year's Portland Handicap hero Halmahera made a pleasing here but needs a stiffer test at this trip and may find his rivals a stride too quick round these tight turns. Artie scored here as a juvenile and developed in to a consistent type last year but, along with the progressive Talbot Avenue, he lacks a recent outing. Consensus won well over this trip at Newcastle last time but this looks a tougher race while last year's winner Compton Banker is well treated but has been below his best of late and has a wide draw to overcome.
