Verdict

A relatively small field but no lack of quality with the first and third from Epsom and the French Derby runner-up in the line-up. The latter, Waldgeist, is by Galileo and partly owned by Coolmore so his presence is intriguing. He had Taj Mahal around one and a half-lengths behind when beaten a short-head at Chantilly where he was headed in the final strides of that extended 1m2f event. The latter wouldn't be expected to trouble Epsom hero Wings Of Eagles here though Andre Fabre's charge did have Ryan Moore's mount a long way behind when landing the Criterium de Saint-Cloud with Capri not far behind in third. The latter could be the best outsider as he was in front of stable companions Douglas Macarthur and The Anvil at Epsom. CRACKSMAN was having only his third start in the Derby and looked as though he'd pulled too hard in the early stages to remain competitive. However, he stayed on well before being swamped by the winner and can gain his revenge despite the ease in the ground. His earlier victory over Permian in the Derby Trial on the Downs has worked out superbly and Pat Smullen is an ideal replacement for the injured Frankie Dettori.
