In depth

Verdict

Thunderball sets the standard and deserves to win a race but we'll take a chance with Excelsior Academy although there are a host of interesting runners to consider here. The selection was beaten a long way in a Newmarket maiden but so many of the yard's horses improve for their initial experience and entries in two Group 1 juvenile contests suggests that this Montjeu colt has shown something at home. Other juveniles in this field to have been given Pattern race entries include Andean Margin and Billy Smart and it will be interesting to see what the market makes of their chances and those of Worth A King's following his disappointing debut at the back end of June. Forte Dei Marmi, Kayfiar and Doncosaque are others to have shown ability and it would be remiss not to mention Guestofthenation. Thunderball progressed with each of his three runs in maidens and didn't fare too badly behind the progressive Lahaleeb in a soft ground nursery last time. He looks sure to run his race but we'll take a chance with Excelsior Academy.
