In depth

Verdict

Compton Eclaire looks to be the pick here, with Red Forest, Celtic Carisma and Let It Be others to consider. The selection remains on the same mark of 52 as when winning an apprentice handicap over this trip at York last time out. He is a thorough stayer who relishes fast ground and with his useful 5lb claimer Andrew Mullen on board to ease the burden on his back he has a tremendous chance of following up. Red Forest can be the one to chase him home at a track he acts well on. His half length second here to Whispering Death on fast ground last October gives him a chance with the selection, though he is not in quite as good form at present and so is opposed. Celtic Carisma has been soundly thrashed in two starts since landing a Southwell handicap in April and looks to be in the grip of the handicapper at present, while Let It Be looks a better proposition. He runs off 57 here, 4lb lower than when landing a c&d win at this meeting last year and he looks capable of going very well, but Compton Eclaire is in fine form and gets the nod.
