In depth

Verdict

Digger is very consistent and can gain a deserved victory over Bid For Fame and Sudden Flight in the finale. Finding the right trip for Digger has been a bit of a conundrum for connections, as he has turned out over distances of between seven furlongs and two miles this year. Since winning his first race for Gay Kelleway, over a mile and a half at Ripon in June, the four-year-old has been tried over two miles on a number of occasions, just failing to last out, while the drop back to 12 furlongs, seemed too short, despite his victory over that trip on turf. So, it is hoped that today's mile and three quarters will do the trick. With Ian Mongan booked and a nice draw, he should make a bold bid and gets the vote. Bid For Fame is very interesting as he was a decent hurdler for Nicky Henderson and even won on the flat as well. Second on his first ever try on the sand six days ago, he has since moved to Nigel Tinkler, and although this trip is a bit short, he will pay to follow this winter for his astute trainer. Roger Ingram landed a right old touch with Sudden Flight at Haydock in September and is sure to have him fit and ready here. He will probably try and make all and can at least reach the frame. Of the others, Majlis and Glory Quest are worth a mention, but for the answer to a competitive looking affair, we return to Digger.
