Steve Cummings is likely to need surgery after suffering multiple injuries in a crash during the Tour of the Basque Country.

Cummings, a stage winner at the Tour de France in 2015 and 2016, was forced to quit the race after a crash on Thursday's fourth stage.

The Team Dimension Data rider, 36, suffered a fractured collarbone, scapula and sternum in the incident, which occurred with around 30km remaining and took out a number of other riders.

Team doctor Jarrad van Zuydam said: "The scapular fracture extends into the joint meaning that Steve will likely need surgery to ensure an accurate reduction.

"If all goes well, we can expect to have him on a trainer in two weeks' time with a gradual return as pain allows."
