The Repsol Honda rider set a new fastest lap of two minutes 0.691 seconds after a fierce tussle with defending champion Jorge Lorenzo.

The factory Yamaha rider was the first to break Casey Stoner's lap record in the final qualifying session before Marquez went quicker.

Marquez again lowered the best time and will start his bid for a fifth MotoGP race win in succession from the front of the grid.

He will be joined on the front row by Lorenzo and Britain's Cal Crutchlow on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha.

Crutchlow will start his home race from the front row but only after an eventful day.

Crutchlow had earlier crashed twice during the first practice session of the day but walked away from both accidents, suffering a badly swollen arm.

Wrecked

Caught out by colder than expected tyre temperatures despite the sunshine, he wrecked his first-choice bike and then also fell from his back-up machine.

However, that was not too badly damaged and he was able to set the third best time in the final qualifying session.

Crutchlow paid tribute to the hard work of his team who got his bike ready

again for the qualifying session.

"The team did a fantastic job to build me at least one bike," he said. "I am pleased to be on the front row for my home Grand Prix."

Crutchlow's team-mate Bradley Smith was 10th quickest in qualifying and will start his home MotoGP race from the fourth row.

Scott Redding, who leads the Moto2 championship by 21 points, will start from second on the grid.
