Johnson back in the groove

Titans see off Cardinals in pre-season

Chris Johnson ran for a touchdown and Vince Young once again outduelled Matt Leinart as the Tennessee Titans trumped the Arizona Cardinals 24-10 in pre-season. Johnson, who last season set an NFL record of 2,509 yards from scrimmage, capped an 85-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter - giving the Titans a lead they never came close to surrendering. The All-Pro rusher carried the ball just six times before watching the remainder of the Monday night game at LP Field from the sideline. Rob Bironas and Jay Feely exchanged chip-shot field goals in the second quarter before Samkon Gado, auditioning for the role of Johnson's primary back-up, put the Titans out of sight with a pair of four-yard touchdown runs after half-time. Young and Leinart, the top two quarterbacks taken in the draft four years ago, saw limited action as both head coaches opted to take a look at those further down their depth charts.

Leinart blanked

Leinart, battling to secure the starting position in Arizona from Derek Anderson, completed four of six passes for 28 yards, the second pre-season match in a row he has failed to generate any points. His former college rival Young, who famously engineered a last-gasp win for the University of Texas over Leinart's University of Southern California in the 2006 BCS national championship game, was on target with nine of 13 pass attempts for 128 yards. "He felt excited about playing," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said of Young. "He was prepared, focused and made plays with his legs, made plays with his arm and was really good on the line of scrimmage as well."
