Sloane Stephens claimed her first professional title as she overcame Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to win the Citi Open in Washington with a 6-1 6-2 final victory.
The world No 35 had been the only player in the WTA’s top 40 never to reach a final before this week.
But the former world No 11 was emphatic as she ended her barren run, dominating from the start and easing to victory against fellow non-seed Pavlyuchenkova.
Stephens won 15 of the first 21 points as she raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set in just 10 minutes and broke her opponent five times in total.
She also saved five break points out of six and hit 20 winners as she dominated against the Russian world No 32.
Stephens - a semi-finalist at Wimbledon in 2013 - said: “I just went out there and tried to play the best I could.
“I think I executed my game very well. It was just a really good day for me. It’s great to win this first title - I haven’t even thought about my next goal yet.
“Last year I was going through a learning process. I learned a lot about myself and there’s still a lot of room to grow.
“To get to this place, to get to this beautiful trophy, I had to go through a lot but it was definitely worth it. Nothing was rushed. Nothing was given to me. I had to work for everything.
“It was just nice that after all of the hard work and everything I've put into it, now I can say that I have a tournament title. Everything happens when it's supposed to happen.”
