Pablo Cuevas and Marcel Granollers fined over Wimbledon protest

Wimbledon doubles player Pablo Cuevas has been fined almost £7,000 after his sit-down protest against an umpire and threat to urinate in a ball can.

The Uruguayan was punished for incidents of "unsportsmanlike conduct" during Monday's third-round match, and Spanish partner Marcel Granollers was fined £5,800 for his own part in the protest.

The contest against Britain's Jonny Marray and Canadian Adil Shamasdin, who won 14-12 in a deciding set on Court Seven, was marred by the incidents involving the defeated duo.

French umpire Aurelie Tourte refused Cuevas permission to take a toilet break after 17 games of the final set, prompting the player's suggestion he could urinate into the can on court.

Tourte at that stage issued a first code violation for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

She then handed the pair a second code violation and one-point penalty in the 26th game of the set after Cuevas hit the ball out of the court in frustration, having started the game with two double faults.

That gave Marray and Shamasdin three match points and Cuevas and Granollers both sat down and refused to play on.

A supervisor had to be called and around 10 minutes later play resumed, with Marray and Shamasdin winning their second match point to seal progress to the fourth round.

The International Tennis Federation announced the punishments at Wimbledon on Wednesday evening.
