Day four commentary
Friday 27 June 2008 21:30, UK
A detailed look back at the fourth day of this year's Wimbledon.
2010 Drama on Centre Court as Andy Roddick, the sixth seed, crashes out to Janko Tipsarevic after losing the fourth set tie-break. Another potential challenger to the dominance of Federer and Nadal falls by the wayside.
2008 It was a brave battle and he won plenty of new fans but Eaton's hopes are ended as Tursanov sees him off in straight sets. The battling Brit gets a big ovation from his new fan club as he departs the scene.
2005 Eaton holds to love! Can he break?
2002 Tursanov takes a 5-2 lead so Eaton will have to hold his serve to stay alive.
2000 Roddick has another set point but once more is denied by Tipsarevic. It's a tie-break and if Roddick loses it, he's out!
1957 Eaton threatens to pull back to 3-3 but Tursanov continues to step up when put under pressure and goes 4-2 in front in the third set.
1953 Roddick holds serve to go 6-5 up.
1948 Roddick has two set points against Tipsarevic but the Serb saves both and levels up at 5-5.
1943 Oh dear. Tursanov breaks and now leads 2-1.
1940 Eaton takes Tursanov to deuce on the Russian's serve but can't cash in. 1-1 in the third.
1937 Eaton isn't giving this up and bounces around the court after winning the first game of the third set.
1935 Sebastien Grosjean has been forced to retire with injury in his all-French battle with Richard Gasquet so the number eight seed goes through.
1934 Over on Centre Court, it's going with serve in the fourth set with Roddick 3-2 in front but trailing Tipsarevic two sets to one.
1931 Eaton holds his serve for 5-2 but Tursanov is relentless and a love game puts him two sets to nil up. It's all gone a bit quiet and plenty of the crowd are now heading for home.
1925 5-1 to Tursunov. Plenty of noise from the crowd still but Eaton is surely going to lose this set.
1920 Andy Roddick has a big battle on his hands now. He's gone two sets to one down against Tipsarevic.
1918 It's a double break for Tursunov as he again gets the better of the Eaton serve. The Russian now leads 4-1 and is a huge favourite to take a two sets to love lead.
1912 In the women's event Dementieva has avoided a shock exit by eventually getting the better of Bacsinszky of Switzerland 6-3 in the third set. Meanwhile 16th seed Victoria Azarenka is also through, beating Sorana Cirstea 6-1 6-3.
1910 Eaton looked in danger of falling away rapidly at the start of the second set following an early break but he regained his composure to win a service game and he now trails 2-1.
1900 Tursunov has somewhat silenced the crowd here on Court 1 and the gathering on Eaton's embankment after running away with the tiebreak 7-2 to take a one set lead. It's a long way back from here for Eaton.
1855 A large number of spectators are gathered on what used to be known as 'Henman Hill' but I'm not sure what we can call it when Eaton's in action. Anyway, back to the action and we're now all set for a tiebreak as Eaton holds his nerve and serve yet again.
1850 Tursunov doesn't look to fazed in his body language despite coming through the toughest game so far on his own serve. Eaton delivered several exquisite winners but after a couple of deuces the Russian moved 6-5 in front and now the Brit must serve to stay in the set.
1842 Over on Centre Court and Roddick has his work cut out against Tipsarevic, who has just taken the second set 7-5. How will the American sixth seed respond to that?
1840 Back on Court 1 now and Eaton is plugging away against Tursunov. He's sticking to the basics but generally getting it right as the set continues to go with serve.
1835 Elsewhere Dementieva has eased her own fears of a shock early exit by winning the second set in her clash with Bacsinszky but it's going with serve in the decider. In the men's draw Nieminen has forced a fifth set against Cilic while Stepanek has finally battled his way into the third round. The Czech, seeded 16, came from two sets down to beat Troicki 6-7 6-7 6-3 6-1 6-2.
1830 Eaton is defying Tursunov's powerful hitting to hang in there and despite facing a break point, he fought back to hold serve in the fourth game and level it up at 2-2.
1822 The crowd are unsurprisingly getting behind Eaton and they collectively raise the roof when he wins his first game to make it 1-1 in the opening set. He's playing an attacking game and to be honest that's the only way of giving himself a chance of winning this.
1820 Jankovic has indeed strolled into the third round with a routine 6-1 6-3 win over Suarez Navarro and she'll no doubt be pleased Sharapova is out given they had been due to meet in the semis.
1815 Here we go on Court 1 as Eaton's dream Wimbledon run continues against tough Russian Tursunov. How do you think he'll get on? They say it will be a fun encounter whatever the outcome but I'm sure the British hope won't want to be mauled!
1805 In the men's event Roddick has edged the first set 7-5 on a tiebreaker against Tipsarevic while there's two marathon matches taking place on the outside courts. On 14, Marin Cilic and Jarkko Nieminen are battling hard at 5-5 in the fourth set with the former leading 2-1 in sets while on 18, Radek Stepanek is 2-0 up in the fifth against Viktor Troicki, who won the opening two sets on tiebreaks.
1800 Right, let's look at what else is happening across all the courts before we concentrate on Britain's Chris Eaton and his match with Dmitry Tursunov. It looks like second seed Jelena Jankovic is about to complete a safe passage into the third round as she leads Carla Suarez Navarro 1-0 in sets and 5-2 in the second while Elena Dementieva, seeded five, is in trouble against Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky, who leads by one set to nil.
1755 Maria Sharapova is out of Wimbledon! Having led 40-15 on her own serve, she tied up and allowed Kudryavtseva to bring up deuce before a double fault gave her opponent match point. In a tense final rally the 20-year-old blasts a bullett winner past the hapless third seed to claim a stunning 6-2 6-4 victory here at SW19 and she can hardly hide her sheer delight. That will send shockwaves through the women's competition and maybe we have a new star on our hands. But where does Sharapova go from here?
1750 On Court 3 it's all over for ninth seed Blake after he lost the final set 6-4 against Schuettler. Meanwhile America's Andy Roddick is out on Centre Court against Janko Tipsarevic and it's currently 5-5 in the first set.
1745 This is where you have to ask if all this Hawk-eye technology is for the good of tennis. Sure, the right decision is made on this occasion, but what if Sharapova had used up all her appeals? And what if this match was being played on an outside court? Is it fair or should we go back to the old days of trusting the human line calls? Let us know what you think by emailing me at christopher.hammer@bskyb.com. In any case Kudryavtseva has held her serve and now it's up to Sharapova to save the match.
1742 It's an absorbing contest between the two Russians and right now Sharapova looks a troubled individual. Having saved one of two break points with a glancing volley at the net, the third seed needs a marginal hawkeye decision in her favour to force deuce. It's staggering to think that without this appeals system, Kudryavtseva would now be serving for the match. Instead it's now 4-4.
1735 Has Sharapova got the willpower to claw her way back into this contest? She digs deep to earn four breaks points in the next and when she finally takes the game her relief is clear to see. There's still plenty of work for her to do and who knows what drama lies in wait for us here on Court 1.
1730 Another break for Kudryavtseva! The young Russian leads her more illustrious compatriot 4-2 in the second set and is now within two games of a famous victory. The crowd can't quite believe what they're seeing but it's great entertainment for those who like early shocks in the tournament.
1725 This is seriously poor stuff from Sharapova although credit must go to Kudryavtseva, world ranked 154, for saving a break point in the fifth game to go 3-2 up. Defeat would be unbelievably damaging for Sharapova but it could do wonders for her 20-year-old opponent's career.
1720 These are dangerous times for Sharapova on Court 1 because a sixth double fault has enabled to break back Kudryavtseva and it's now 2-2 in the second set. She's walking a tightrope right now and can't afford many more errors if she's to stay in the tournament.
1711 Earlier we said Blake was heading to the third round but it's all gone rather pear shaped for the American. Schuettler has rallied back to force a deciding set which is so far going with serve. Tense moments there on Court 3.
1708 With a little help from the net, Sharapova breaks Kudryavtseva in the first game of the second set and could this be the turning point? Her performance simply must improve but then again it can't get much worse. Meanwhile another women's seed is safely through to the third round with Peer beating Loit 6-3 6-4.
1705 One of our readers Colin Blackett feels Andy Murray doesn't have enough to win Wimbledon. He says: "A couple of easy victories against easy opponents means nothing." I agree there is still along way to go and much stiffer tests are just around the corner but it's encouraging to see him make these early games look so easy. Let's hope he just stays free of injury. Do you agree with Colin or are you more optimistic? Let me know by emailing christopher.hammer@bskyb.com.
1702 It's going from bad to worse for Sharapova as Kudryavtseva shocks the third seed by winning the first set 6-2. There's a state of disbelief here right now because this is not the Sharapova we expect to see on the grass at Wimbledon.
1700 Safina is through to the third round in double quick time, wrapping up the second set against Su-Wei Hsieh 6-2. The whole match only took one hour and one minute.
1655 Back to the singles action and Sharapova is off to a nightmare start against her unseeded Russian opponent Kudryavtseva, who leads 4-2 after an early break.
1652 It's been a convincing day for the Murray family with Andy's brother Jamie winning his men's doubles clash with his partner Max Mirnyi to reach the second round.
1650 Murray will now face Haas in round three after the German brushed aside Robredo 6-4 6-4 6-3. That will be a much tougher affair but certainly one he can win and indeed must win to keep the British hopes alive.
1648 It's game, set and match on Centre Court as Murray storms into the third round at Wimbledon with a ruthless 6-4 6-2 6-2 triumph over Malisse. Perhaps more importantly the manner of his performance will have sent out a warning to his major title rivals at SW19. Do you think he has enough to go all the way? Let me know by emailing christopher.hammer@bskyb.com and we'll publish the best ones.
1644 Murray is now serving for the match after breaking Malisse yet again. He's simply had too much quality for the Belgian throughout the vast majority of this brief encounter and it's just brilliant to watch.
1643 Dinara Safina, the runner-up at this year's French Open, is looking good against Su-Wei Hsieh and leads 3-1 in the second set having won the first 6-3. Also in the women's competition 24th seed Shahar Peer also looks like she's heading to the third round after winning the opening set against Emilie Loit.
1640 Murray continues to steadilly cruise along although Malisse produced one of the best shots of the match with a stretching cross-court forehand winner. Mind you, it counted for nothing because the British favourite still won it after a frustrating tussle to move 4-2 in front.
1630 Next up on Court 1 we have third seed Maria Sharapova up against compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva and we'll keep you posted on all the developments and drama coming from there.
1625 Out on Court 3 America's Blake is now well on top against Schuettler having just won the third set 6-4. Elsewhere Haas is romping away towards a victory against Robredo - he leads 4-1 in the third set.
1621 The British number one actually has to save a break point in the next game but he survives that little scare to move 2-0 up and it won't be too long now before he confirms his place in the third round.
1618 Murray picks up where he left off at the end of the previous set to win the opening game of the third on Malisse's serve. We thought this would be easy and so it's proving on a hot sunny day at Wimbledon. But the big question is can he march all the way to the title a week on Sunday? Let us know what you think by emailing me at christopher.hammer@bskyb.com.
1612 Nadal is now through to the third round having battled past Gulbis in four sets. The second seed lost the opening set but in the end had just too much for the talented Latvian youngster.
1610 The mini Malisse recovery is over as Murray breaks again before successfully serving for the second set to win it 6-2. Don't blink now or you might miss what should be the final set.
1606 It's the battle of the Tommy's on Court 11 where Haas has opened up a two-set lead over Robredo, taking them both 6-4.
1605 I may have spoken too soon because Malisse has pulled one break back against Murray, who has just got a little complacent as one eye catches sight of the third round.
1601 Malisse has halted Murray's momentum ever so slightly in the second set by holding his own serve but still trails 4-1 in what has become a one-sided match.
1600 Gulbis is refusing to give in against Nadal and it's so far 3-3 in the fourth set which he must win to force a decider.
1555 Back on Centre Court we're witnessing a dominant performance from Murray which suggests he's championship-winning material. He's making light work of Malisse and leads 3-0 in the second set after two breaks of serve. Nice and easy.
1552 Massive relief for Blake on Court 3. The American has come through a tiebreak 10-8 to win the second set and square up his match with Schuettler and you'd back him to push on from here.
1549 There's just no stopping the flying Scotsman at the moment and another break in the opening game of the second set has put him well in command. He moves 2-0 up after holding his own with ease and it's good to see him make light work of such an opponent.
1545 Sure enough Murray serves out the first set comfortably enough and unless Malisse can hit the breaks any time soon, this clash could be over in a flash.
1542 It's been a long struggle of a day for Youzhny but it's now worth all the effort because he's clinched the deciding set 6-3 in a gruelling encounter with Galvani of Italy on Court 2.
1540 Having taken that early break, Murray now has the chance to serve for the opening set and it's pretty plain sailing for him at the moment.
1535 We'll quickly switch our attention to the other show court for a moment because Nadal has just taken a tense second set via a tiebreak against Gulbis and maybe we can assume the second seed is heading onwards to round three.
1532 We've had an interesting email from Edwin Kusorgbor who believes the British media are putting too much pressure on Murray to win Wimbledon and he should be allowed to play his own game. That's a fair point but I think we're all so desperate for a British winner we just can't help it! Is pressure a bad thing anyway? Obviously Tim Henman didn't exactly thrive on it during those semi-final opportunities but Murray does have a more aggressive demeanor to handle it.
1530 Scotland's finest is supremely confident on his own serve and easily levels the set at 2-2. In the next game he earns another three break points and on the third attempt he strikes when his Belgian opponent finds the net. Murray clenches his fist as he walks back to his chair a happy man.
1522 Malisse holds serve again but for the second successive time he's taken as far as deuce so the early signs are that Murray has the upper hand, even if the actual score does not suggest that quite yet. Let us know what you think about Murray's chances by emailing in to christopher.hammer@bskyb.com.
1519 Murray smoothly registers his first game of the match on his own serve to make it 1-1 and he's quickly finding his rhythm in front of his home crowd.
1518 Gulbis had Nadal on the rack in the 10th game of the third set as he looked for the crucial break but the Spaniard held firm to make it 5-5.
1515 It was so nearly a superb start for Murray but Malisse survived a break point in the opening game of the match to move 1-0 up.
1510 Blake is mounting his comeback against Schuettler on Court 2 having lost the opening set. He leads 3-0 in the next while on Court 2 Youzhny has been taken to a deciding set by Galvani, who had previously looked a beaten man.
1505 And here comes Andy Murray out on Centre Court for the match we've all been waiting this afternoon. He's had a slightly longer wait than he might have thought and will hope to defeat Belgium's Xavier Malisse as quickly as possible. If he wants to win Wimbledon then he has to brush past weaker opponents like this with few difficulties.
1500 Tanasugam has proved me wrong. I thought she may crumble having thrown away a commanding 3-0 lead in the second set against Russia's 13th seed Zvonareva but after all that she's come through it with a 7-6 4-6 6-3 triumph.
1455 It's all over on Centre Court and Williams progresses through to the third round at Wimbledon after a 7-5 6-2 win, but she was made to work by the energetic Keothavong, who must now look forward to a positive future after that performance. Williams on the other hand has yet to reach top gear in the defence of her title but will be pleased enough not to drop a set.
1450 Keothavong's brave challenge against Williams is almost at an end having missed the opportunity to break back in the second set. She must now serve to stay in the match.
1444 There's been a five-set classic on Court 14 today and Austria's Jurgen Melzer has just won through 4-6 6-2 3-6 6-4 6-1 against Jesse Levine of America.
1442 As expected Nadal has stormed through the second set against Gulbis, polishing it off 6-2 to level up the match. Elsewhere in the men's draw, ninth seed James Blake is enduring a torrid time against Rainer Schuettler, who leads 4-1 in the opening set.
1440 Let's get back on Centre Court now where Keothavong is far from lying down against Williams in the second set. Although the defending champ leads 4-1 after a break in the fourth game, the determination etched on the British number one's face and her pumped up reactions are at least giving the home crown a player to be proud of.
1435 Nadal is a man on a mission over on Court 1 after losing the first set and the Spaniard is probably not the best opponent to fire up. He's stormed into a 5-2 lead over Gulbis in the second set and now producing the kind of relentless tennis we know he's capable of.
1432 Earlier we told you about Youzhny's comeback against Galvani and now it seems as if he's on course for the third round. The Russian leads by two sets to one on Court 2 and looks well in control.
1430 The marathon deciding set on Court 11 has finally concluded with Martinez Sanchez dumping 32nd seed Mirza out of the championships after a gripping 6-0 4-6 9-7 victory.
1425 Over on Court One, a defiant Nadal is digging in against the talented Gulbis from Latvia and is currently a break up in the second set. Even if the Spaniard does win through, this clash will definitely be a wake-up call for him.
1421 Perhaps inevitably Williams pulled out the stops when it really mattered to edge a tightly-fought first set against Keothavong, winning it 7-5 after 69 minutes. The crowd have gone rather quiet now their unrealistic hopes of a major shock have surely been extinguished.
1420 Zvonareva has indeed kept her Wimbledon flame flickering - for another set at least - by forcing a decider against Tanasugam, who must really be kicking herself about throwing a 3-0 lead away. This could really count against her if she dwells on it too much and allows the 13th seed Russian to pounce.
1417 Remember if you want to get in touch about any of today's matches just drop us an email to christopher.hammer@bskyb.com - do you think Keothavong's emergence is the start of a bright future for British female tennis or is this simply just a flash in the pan?
1415 It's been a hugely impressive performance from Keothavong and to see her compete with Williams in this manner is simply a joy to behold - especially given the general quality of British women players over recent years. It's 5-5 now on Centre Court and it's still anyone's game.
1410 The spectators on Court 11 are enjoying a thriller as Mirza and Martinez Sanchez are currently locked at 6-6 in the deciding set. Elsewhere in the women's draw, Zvonareva has come back from the dead to lead Tanasugam 5-4 in the second set of their second-round encounter.
1405 Keothavong is still fighting hard on Centre Court but will now serve to stay in the first set as she trails 4-5 right now.
1400 Nadal has fallen one set down against Gulbis, who took it 7-5 having held his nerve to win the decisive break point. He clenches his fist and now the 'dream final' between Federer and Nadal is in serious threat.
1355 Despite being clearly frustrated over missing all those chances in the previous game, Keothavong regained her composure on serve to make it 3-3 against Williams, who can't have been expecting such a testing challenge today.
1352 Germany's Kiefer has now raced his way through to the third round, having notched up an easy 6-0 6-3 6-1 triumph over Vassalo Arguello. In the other men's match we've been closely following, Youzhny has just squared up his clash with Galvani at one set each.
1350 It's amazing tennis from Keothavong, who continues to prove she's more than a match for the stunned Williams by earning an incredible eight break points in the next game. It's a shame the Brit doesn't quite have the killer instinct to finish off these chances and it doesn't come as a surprise to see her opponent get her act together to finally move 3-2 up.
1345 In the men's event, Nadal is level pegging with Gulbis at 5-5 in the opening set while Kiefer is on the brink of marching into the third round.
1335 Keothavong is certainly making Williams sweat for every point and despite having to defend four break points, she's eventually able to square the set at 2-2. It was a cracking game full of tireless rallies, missed chances and clinical winners.
1330 Zvonareva looks like she's heading out as she now trails Tanasugam 3-0 in the second set and it's a long way back from there.
1322 The Centre Court crowd erupt as Keothavong breaks Williams in an absorbing game to stay in touch and now the British starlet can relax a bit more on what surely must be a nerve-wracking occasion for her right now.
1320 Men's second seed Rafael Nadal is up against Ernest Gulbis of Latvia on Court 1 and they've both just shared the first two games.
1316 Over on Court 18 Zvonareva has lost a titanic tiebreak with Tanasugarn to fall 1-0 down. The Thai clinched it 12-10 and there is now certainly a shock on the cards. Meanwhile 32nd seed Mirza is on her way back against Martinez Sanchez having levelled the match at one set apiece.
1314 Williams comfortably holds serve in the opening game of the match but the Centre Court crowd soon find their voice when Keothavong fires down an ace to win the first point in the next. However it's all in vain as the American breezes into a 2-0 lead.
1310 Richard Williams, as usual, is watching in the stands and I wonder if he did any pre-match scouting on Keothavong to prepare his daughter for this second-round encounter? If not then they could both be in for a surprise.
1305 It's Anne Keothavong's big moment now on Centre Court as she faces the daunting challenge of defending champion Venus Williams. It's her first outing on the famous show court here at SW19 and hopefully she'll make it one to remember, even if she doesn't win.
1300 Youzhny did indeed lose the first set against Galvani and he really must up his game if he wants to stay alive at Wimbledon.
1257 Zvonareva has recovered well against Tanasugarn, fighting back from a break down to force a first-set tiebreaker.
1255 We have some significant news coming through regarding former champion Lindsay Davenport, who has been forced to pull out of the championships with a knee injury.
1252 Youzhny is struggling in the early afternoon sun and buries his head in his towel after dropping his serve against Galvani, who now has the opportunity to serve for a 1-0 set lead. Another seed on Court 3 - Nicolas Kiefer - is experiencing contrasting fortunes, but mainly because he's simply playing better. He's wrapped up the opening set against Martin Vassalo Arguello 6-0 in double quick time and is easily on course for the third round.
1250 Over on Court 11, the women's 32nd seed Sania Mirza is in big trouble against Martinez Sanchez of Spain having been absolutely thrashed 6-0 in the opening set. It's not looking that much better for Zvonareva, who still trails by a break against Tanasugarn, who is now serving to win the first set at 5-4.
1240 The big-serving Russian has a pretty good record here having reached the fourth round three times before but surely has the credentials to go that bit further on grass.
1235 Already we've seen some long draining rallies and this fourth game on Court 2 has taken quite some time. Galvani saved a couple of break points before eventually holding out to draw the set level at 2-2.
1230 Anne Keothavong is getting in some last-minute practice ahead of her huge showdown with Venus Williams but for the next half an hour or so we'll concentrate on the play on Court 2, where Youzhny is having a tough tussle with Galvani.
1220 At the moment it's not looking so good for Vera Zvonareva, who's already a break down in her second-round clash with Tamarine Tanasugarn - could this be an early shock of the day?
1215 As always we welcome your views on any issues and topics at SW19 so email them in to christopher.hammer@bskyb.com and the best ones could be published. How do you think Andy Murray will cope later on? I'm predicting a rather easy straight-sets triumph.
1210 Fortunately the weather is supposed to be decent throughout the day with sunny intervals and hopefully no rain! The players around the outside courts are just about to commence their matches and there's a couple of noteable seeds in action as we speak. In the men's competition Russia's Mikhail Youzhny, seeded 17, is up against Stefano Galvani on Court 2 while 27th seed Nicolas Kiefer faces Martin Vassalo Arguello of Argentina on three. Meanwhile in the women's event 13th seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia is playing Tamarine Tanasugarn out on Court 18.
1130 Welcome to our coverage of day four of Wimbledon 2008 and many of you will be eager for British star Andy Murray to safely negotiate his way past Belgium's Xavier Malisse in the second round later on. The Scot is in action after the opening match on Centre Court, which sees defending women's champion Venus Williams take on another home hope Anne Keothavong. First up on Court One we have men's second seed Rafael Nadal up against Ernest Gulbis of Latvia and they'll be followed by Maria Sharapova's clash with Alla Kudryavtseva. Britain's Chris Eaton then gets his big chance on Court One against the dangerous Russian Dmitry Tursunov. So stay tuned with us to keep up to date with all the best action from SW19!
