A silver medallist at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, she finished third in 4 mins 08.05 secs to secure a place in Tuesday's semi-finals.
"I felt good," England said. "I was quite nervous before because I had not raced since the trials.
"That feels like an awful long time ago. I am glad to get that one under my belt and go forwards from that."
However, Olympic finalist Laura Weightman, who has missed a lot of training after falling at the British Championships last month, was only able to manage an 11th-place finish in the first 1,500m heat, posting a time of 4 minutes 14.38 secs.
William Sharman progressed from his 110m hurdles heat.
The 28-year-old crossed the line in 13.51 seconds to take third place and claim a place in Monday's semi-finals.
"It felt like the first round," Sharman said. "It was a little bit messy in places, I didn't get the start I would ideally like to get.
"I think I performed to the best of my ability this early in the morning, so that is the main thing. I got the job done and I am into the semi-final."
Sharman, who finished fourth and fifth respectively in the two previous World Championships in Berlin and Daegu, is an outsider for the title in Moscow.
However, he has impressed of late, posting a personal best of 13.26 at last month's Anniversary Games in London.
Nigel Levine made it through to men's 400m hurdles semi-finals with a comfortable fourth-place finish in 45.41s and Asha Philip ran 11.29secs to reach the women's 100m semi-finals.
