Former Premier League footballer Leon McKenzie has retired from boxing at the age of 39 after losing out to Cello Renda in a Southern Area super-middleweight title fight.

McKenzie looked on course to win Saturday's York Hall clash for the vacant title on points, but succumbed to a barrage of punches in the penultimate round from 43-fight veteran Renda.

Ex-Crystal Palace and Norwich City striker McKenzie turned professional as a boxer in 2013, aged 35, following in the footsteps of father, trainer and ex-European champion Clinton, and uncle and former three-weight world champion Duke.

After eight wins and a draw from his first nine bouts - including victory in an International Masters title fight in 2015 - McKenzie lost a split decision in an English title fight against Jahmaine Smyle last November.

And after suffering a ninth round knockout to 2008 Prizefighter runner-up Renda, McKenzie has now decided to hang up his gloves.
