'Pocket Rocket' determined to defy advancing years

Wayne McCullough believes he can roll back the years and become a world champion again within two years. The former WBC bantamweight champion returns to the ring in New York on March 16 to take on Alex Becerra in a 10-round bout. Having lost to WBC super bantamweight champion Oscar Larios twice and Juan Ruiz in a bout for the vacant NBAF featherweight title, the 'Pocket Rocket' has it all still to prove at Madison Square Garden. But despite seven career defeats now tainting his 34-fight record and appearing to quit after his loss to Ruiz, skysports.com columnist McCullough remains as confident as ever. "My goal is to become world champion within two years," said McCullough, the former WBC bantamweight champion. "I should be a three-time world champion because a lot of people thought I won against Daniel Zaragoza (a split decision defeat for the WBC super-bantamweight title in 1997) and the first Larios fight. "I'm 38 but I've taken good care of my body. I'm an Irish guy who doesn't drink and I have a gym in my home. I'm like Bernard Hopkins." Former Irish Olympian Andy Lee will headline in New York, where he battles Antwun Echols in the 10-round main event.
